The poinsettia plant is feted today and duly recognized for the mystical properties it brings to these magical holidays. A group of Franciscan priests in Mexico -- where this plant originated -- called it 'la flor de la Nochebuena,' and explained that the poinsettia only blooms as Christmastime as a powerful prayer from Mother. However, centuries before this, the plant was used freely and successfully in medicines and dyes in many different parts of that country, by many different cultures. In fact, the Aztecs believed this flower was a symbol of purity and light and would display it in abundance to bring those same qualities into their lives. If you are ready to bring the peace and the purity of the season into your own sacred space, today would be a wonderful time to adopt a poinsettia and place it proudly

Intrepid explorer Roald Amundsen planted a Norwegian flag in the South Pole on this day in 1911, claiming discovery of this land after locating it in only 57 days of searching. Sometimes it can seem like traveling during the holidays can take that long as well. If you want to travel through this season with ease and grace, it is highly recommended that -- before departing to go anywhere -- you download and then pack a picture of what's called 'The Mystic Knot' in Eastern lore. This knot is believed to untangle and traveling snafus when carried on your person. And should you encounter any out of the ordinary delays or upsets, be sure to take the knot out and rub it three times with the hand you write with. This should smooth things out in no time at all!

The symbol of the bird is said to be very important in November, as it is associated with many of the events and influences that color this month. Certainly the major holiday of this month almost centers completely around a bird. It is also believed that, as the seasons change, celebrations involving other species of birds ensure that this time of pending darkness will not triumph over the people (the light) and that joy triumphs over sorrow. In Feng Shui, one bird that can protect against corrupt influences, evil and negativity is the rooster. Displaying any representation or symbol of this bird inside the house is said to bring protection and beneficial and benevolent energies to all family members. He is considered both a courageous and a courteous bird, qualities he shares with whatever space he is situated in. This crowing cock also represents achievement and fame and would do well to be perched in the 'Fame' area of home or office. And, speaking of the office, it has long been held (and confirmed by many of my clients) that placing a rooster figurine on your desk will stop office politicking or any interoffice angst where you are concerned. Bring this bird into your house and let him protect you on almost every front. Cockadoodle-YOU!

peace!

The Wright Brothers might have successfully completed their first flight from Kitty Hawk on this day in 1903, but I'm pretty sure they never saw how aerospace and aviation would progress from there. And, whenever we talk about planes and traveling, we have to pretty much go right to the luggage issue. Regis Philbin went on a personal crusade against a major airline that not only lost his wife's luggage during an overseas trip they took, but didn't seem to care too much about their egregious error either. Feng Shui says that in order to ensure that your bags arrive at the same destination that you do, you should place nine inches of red ribbon, thread or string around the handles of each individual piece.

As the Winter Solstice and another season approaches, and time really does seem to speed up, today might be a great day to surround yourself with special friends and assistance from some of the invisible realms. Angels and cherubs are considered lucky symbols in every culture and tradition, as their mere presence fills the room with the potential and possibility of peace and prosperity and good will to men. Six angels or cherubs placed in the 'Helpful People' area of the main floor in your space will bring those very same energies winging their way towards you and providing you with benefits you can scarcely imagine.

We see so much evergreen all around us at this time of year. As Martha might be wont to say though, 'it's a good thing.' See, green is really cool -- a cooling color, that is. Traditionally, at this time of year there is an abundance of fire energies heating up a lot of our living places; candles creating low-lit ambiance, active wood burning fireplaces and additional lights strewn around our space that can actually create a subtle sense of stress if not counterbalanced with a cooling and healing color such as green. Plants and evergreens will clam the atmosphere and also promote peace as well as lifted spirits and emotions. Tone down that seasonal red with a bit of green and find harmony hanging in your stocking this holiday season.

If you do decide to go caroling today, be sure to take along a little something special for those whose friendship and love you cherish and whose homes you are planning to stop at. Not only should you each add something to their holiday decor that will leave them with a personal and powerful energetic reminder that is much more than a seasonal song in their heart, you should also encourage them to come and visit you with something that speaks to their individual energies as well. Some customs and traditions tell us to make sure that anyone and everyone who spends time in our space should also add something personal to the decor in our own home in order to make the energies more solidly and sacredly linked. In my house, we leave some trinkets and small ornaments at the door so anyone entering can just grab and hang on the tree, adding their invaluable energies to ours!

Today marks the annual Winter Solstice, a time when the Sun is the furthest from the celestial equator, and appears to hang lowest in the sky exactly at noontime. At that same time today, take a tablespoon of honey and hold it up to that noontime Sun for a few seconds allowing the light and bright rays to imbue this soothing stuff with an almost magical quality. Then just drink this elixir right down. This is a centuries old custom that speaks to bringing sweet and wonderful elements and energies to everyday of your life during the length of this specific solstice. So sweet!

If you don't have a fireplace or for any other reason cannot burn the traditional Yule log then why not make your own Yule candle? Get the biggest and fattest red candle that you can find and then with any really sharp instrument carve some symbol of the Sun on any side of it. Place your Yule candle on a large holder or in any heat-proof tray and ring with seasonal and magical plants. Holly, pine, mistletoe, rosemary and bay, along with other pieces of evergreen, will bring cleansing and clearing energies into your space while also refreshing and reinvigorating your home in preparation for the next cycle of light. Speaking of light, placing candles anywhere in the home on this day is said to ensure a year of plenty and prosperity, warmth and, what else ... LIGHT!

Boxing Day, so named in jolly old England for when those in position to gave the less fortunate presents and gifts, expecting nothing in return. Many also refer to this day as the Feast of Saint Stephen, sainted when he was stoned to death for his spiritual beliefs. In some parts of Ireland on this day, boys would go from door to door collecting money for their 'dead wren' -- a symbol of the stoned Saint Stephen. In Poland, people throw oats at priests today and walnuts at each other representing wishing one another a fertile and productive life. Even Good King Wenceslas wanted a good glass of wine on the Feast of Stephen, after he himself had been out and about giving gifts of food and wine and money to the less fortunate in his kingdom. On this day, why not think about looking over your own booty and bounty and boxing some of it up to give away? You will move energies on every altruistic level as well as will open up opportunities for new and exciting ones to come your own way. Once you've delivered some treasures to those who deserve nothing less, then go home and do as lucky old Wenceslas did and pour yourself a nice glass of chianti, sans the fava beans, of course!

Often at this time of year, not everyone is hustling and bustling and enjoying all the hoopla surrounding all the holidays. In fact, there are many who are lonely or feel a sense of sadness around these days. There is a particular essential oil, Benzoin, which can be easily diffused into the atmosphere in order to try to diffuse any feelings of melancholy or quiet anxiety. This oil can actually start to shift an inner feeling from one of possible disassociation and disconnection from those around us, to one of internal peace with the benefit of feeling as if you belong no matter where you are. Put 10 drops of Benzoin into a bath and soak in the strength and the steadiness that it offers while washing some of that sadness down the drain. If at all possible, you can also diffuse the oil into the atmosphere by simply slipping 10 drops into a bowl of steaming water and then letting that integrate itself into your space. It's totally fine to feel alone in a crowd, but not if that circumstance makes you feel lonely, sad or even afraid. Giving comfort and the ability to cope is the gift of this true essential oil.
