Ok, some of you know that I'm working towards medical school.

I took the MCAT over the summer, got a competative-but-not-amazing score (I haven't finished my physics courses yet, and a big chunk of the test is physics, so that part didn't go particularly well. . . but my bio/ochem score was very good, and my verbal was >98th percentile). My GPA is ok. As is my tendency, I've got a lot of As in hard classes and Bs/Cs in stupid classes (I get bored). On paper, I'm kind of a weird applicant.

This year, I've decided that I'm only applying to the University of Washington School of Medicine, because that's the only place I really want to go. If I don't get in on my first try, I'll apply to more places next time around (and with an improved MCAT score). UWSOM is consistently ranked one of the best med schools in the country. I'm lucky that it's in my hometown; being a public school, they preferentially accept in-state students.

ANYWAY, I applied, and I got a request for a secondary application. A lot of people do, so it doesn't mean all that much. But it's one more step on this long fucking road. So I submitted that. And now I wait to find out if I get an interview. It's a big 'if'. But I interview well. If I can get that far, my chances go way up.

I'm dying. DYING. I've been working towards this for so damned long, and I just want to GET there already. I wake up thinking about it, I go to sleep thinking about it. I know I'll get in eventually. But I'd really love to start next fall. I'm trying not to get my hopes up; I think it's a bit of a long shot. But . . . it could happen.

Anyway. Yeah, I'm freaking out. My usually calm, grounded perspective is slipping on me. Eek!

I know once we have these things behind us, it doesn't look like such a long path, or such a big deal. But in the anticipatory moment, it's hard to remember that. You know?

Italy is a GREAT plan, and if I had any gawddamned money, I'd be there with ya in a heartbeat. Honestly, part of the reason I'm so anxious about the timeline is that I'm sick of being an impoverished post-bacc undergrad. It's rough. At least you can get proper loans for professional school. I'll still be a broke-azz student, but it will be better. I don't ask for much. I just want tofu and broccoli instead of beans and rice sometimes, that's all.
