And why are they so appreciated by movie geeks? Sure, GREAT adventure movies, but dayum, are there really so little people that read the actual books and are MUCH dissappointed with the way the hobbits and talking trees look?

I suppose not so many people read the books first... they are more poetic and much more exciting than the movies. I remember being a youngster and Shelob gave me nightmares! The movie...uhmmmm.

And Liv Tyler and Hugo Weaving as elves? WTF!

The things I loved most seeing coming to life were the buildings; the sets of miniatures of Minas Tirith were amazing.

I didn't read the LOTR books, so when I approached the first one a lot of it went over my head. I actually didn't even finish the movie. I got 2 hours into it and it still wasn't over. I ended up falling asleep. Never bothered to finish it just returned it to Blockbuster. I'm an Elijah Wood fan so I don't think I would've been interested had he not been in it. Adventure/fantasy stuff like Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, etc. require gobs of attention and investment and I'm just not into movies like that, the way I would be into a musical album. But I understand the appeal.

Lord of the Rings is very much its own world and headtrip. I appreciate that. But it takes massive amounts of time to get acclimated to it. Time I just couldn't really devote to getting lost in it.

The scenery/atmosphere was my favorite part of the movie. The Mines of Moria were probably my favorite "atmosphere" of the movies.

Just started my yearly read of Tolkien. Silmarillion, The Hobbit and LOTR. Seems that the end of the year is a great time for me to read that story.

I think the real question is why are they so LONG?
They need to change the name to "Lord have mercy this a long ass movie"

I found the books to be quite a chore to read through. You'd read about 200 pages of one story line before he swapped over to the other story line. It was tedius.

I loved The Hobbit, but LOTR was more tedious than it was enjoyable. I did enjoy portions of it, but there were way too many "God help me get through this" moments. I finally gave up.

Yeah, I know this post really doesn't help this thread out much, so my apologies to the org.

the first movie was okay but the second one put me right to sleep. i mean, look, if you've watched one scene where bunch of elf people swing swords on a vacant lot on an overcast day, you've pretty much seen them all. they needed some tie fighters or disco butterfly fairies or something, mix it up, i don't know. i can't get into all that mess, it doesn't entice me.
