My friend who grew up in the south calls every kind of soda "a coke"; Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc. Funny! But then again, we say "Duck, duck, gray duck!" "She made me glad to be a man" | |

1.) Do you call green ice cream with little bits of chocolate in it "Peppermint Bon-Bon," or "Mint Chip"? 2.) As a child, did you play "Duck, Duck, Goose," or "Duck, Duck, Gray Duck" or neither of those? From what I've been able to gather, duck, duck, gray duck is strictly a Minnesota thing. 3.) Do you call the cover of a container a "lid" or a "top"? 4.) Is a sweet, carbonated beverage a "soda" or a "pop"? Do you refer to any kind of soda pop as "a coke"? I call it soda, but I started that when I was a teenager on purpose. Everyone around me (including my family) called/calls it "pop". 5.) Do you call a shirt that's made out of the same material as sweatpants a "sweatshirt" or a "sweater"? A sweater is knitted by your grandmother. Or those nice people who make sweaters for the stores to sell. 6.) Which of the following would you say: "I went to the movies," "I went to the cinema," "I went to a show," "I went to the theater"? I'm most likely to say I went to a movie. I do enjoy saying "the movies", though. To me a "show" is a live music event and "going to the theatre" means you're seeing a play unless you specify a movie theatre. 7.) Is an ice-cream drink a "shake," a "malt," or a "malted" (even if the drink contains no chocolate malt powder). A shake is a shake and a malt is a malt. They are two different things and I call them what they are. Carrie - I totally agree. I was born and raised in Mpls, too, (am still there) and all of my answers are the same as yours. My dad (who's from Winthrop, MN)calls anything with ice cream in it a malt, even if there's no malt powder in it. Odd. My friend who grew up in the south calls every kind of soda "a coke"; Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc. Funny! But then again, we say "Duck, duck, gray duck!" Yeah, the malt thing is from our elders. I think my grandparents always called it a malt whether there was malt in it or not. I figured we'd be the same. We're the only ones who'd say "peppermint bon bon" too! |
