I wouldn't call it a "good" movie but it did try to tell a respectable story. But I should confess - I have a HUGE bias against John Singleton. Not only have I met him on occassion & found him extraordinarily & unnecessarily rude, but he's cocky as all hell yet doesn't have the skill to back it up. A truly talented filmmaker wouldn't feed us recycled, unimaginitive shit like "Baby Boy" where Black men are portrayed as animals & Black women as baby-making whores... I don't sound annoyed, do I?? shank it... [This message was edited Thu Nov 28 2:50:10 PST 2002 by CalhounSq] I'm sorry about John Singleton being rude to you when you met him.

And he's made how many good movies since New Jack City??? CRICKETS He had more help on that movie than he'll admit to - the cinematographer should have gotten co-directing credit, SOMETHING... it was a joke...like all of Mario Van Peebles movies after NJC... WHEWWW!

Everyone is to blame really. I know only certain films get past the gate b/c the audiences eat it up, it makes $ & the studios want more of the same. BUT when you sell your soul & sell out your own people by creating that crap, happily perpetuating ignorance & stereotypes, you (John S.) gotta take some responsibility for that. It's bad enough his movies suck, I wish he hadn't gone down this road on top of that - Baby Boy was utter bullshit...

I don't think Baby Boy made much money. GOOD! But even if it didn't, it's those kinds of movies (ultra ghetto dramas & comedies) that continue to get financing more easily than a film that really explores African Americans as PEOPLE. I know that's true across the board but it's more prevalent in Black Cinema b/c there's so little product out there, the balance of good vs. bad is ridiculously off. How much you wanna bet Ice Cube's new Friday film is gonna make $?? Just the fact that a rapper can so easily land a 3 picture deal tells you something - they want a certain kind of product & Cube is ready to serve it up... it's not your booty, it's your beauty... WTF???

according to the-numbers.com, Baby Boy made $28,734,552, and had a $16 mil budget.
Friday After Next is already up to $15,746,000...
