http://www.youtube.com/wa...LAuzT_x8Ek I saw an iconoclasts where sean penn was discussing it. But I've never had a chance to see it. I want to. It will happen. Just a matter of when.

The movie is inspiring and sad, the sound track is amazing. I highly recommend both the book and movie, it makes you think. Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.. (Voltaire)

is that a doozer!....awesome! It's a heavy movie--based on a true story. I saw it in the theater and then watched it again on disc with my family. When it was over they were a little angry because the end was so upsetting. Afterwards I went outside to look at and appreciate the stars in the night sky.

The only complaint I heard was that in real life the main character wasn't such a likable guy. He got niced up for the movie.

The most idiotic moron ever.
Sure, okay, you're fed up with capitalism and your luxurious western life. Fine. Do you really have to tear your family to pieces in the process? You're such a self centered dick you can't send ONE single letter to your sister? You find people you could easily be happy with for the rest of your life but NO, you MUST live in a bus in the freezing cold to prove to a world that doesn't care that you are DEEP. Devastating MORE new people in the process. So you go to said freezing location and don't even bother to learn to catch fish? WTF? You live off...plants instead? An unnecessary death to prove an unnecessary point makes for a shitty, infuriating movie.

read the book, haven't seen the movie.
the kid was a dumb ass. i mean, it's admirable to try to do something like that, but his chutzpah in thinking he could do it without some real training or experience was very off-putting to me.

She's done some dumb things, but she's also a set for life millionaire and she hasn't died in a bus by eating plants yet, either

You mention the words "fan" and "britney" near anyone and they instantly get that leave britney alone kid in their heads. In fact, most visible internet fans of hers are fucking embarassing morons looking for their 15 minutes. You'd be pleasantly surprised if you met the fans I know.

Wow, great responses
I saw this movie at the theater and have watched it 3 more times since it came out on dvd. I bought the book and have the soundtrack. Needless to say it struck a nerve with me and I couldn't get enough. I've watch the interview on youtube with Sean Penn an Eddie Vedder and I think Penn did a great job with this and really gave you some insight and depth into this kid - whether you agree with his actions or not. I found the book interesting in the way that he gave examples of others who had done the same thing. Most had the same ending as this story but they all shared the common theme of "leaving the grid". I see some Matrix in this story as well. Personally, the hippie-esque freedom that he exhibited was inspiring. It's every mans dream to be free of the grind and the expectations of life. The fact that he was intelligent but naive really was why he died. A little more life experience may have him living in Alaska for the next 20 years without actually being a part of society. Great movie that moved me like no other movie I've seen in the last 10 years. [Edited 11/18/08 9:34am]
