Drag and transgenderism were the two hardest things for me to accept when i was a gayling. However the people that saved my life were, Tootie and Miss Tracie. A drag queen and a transwoman. They taught me things I never learnt about life and love and how to deal with things as a young gay boy. They inspired to be true to myself. I walk in awe of their truth and to this day admire and respect them for who they are. I've known and met many people in various stages of the transition. I will say those that are just starting on the path you can see the pain and depression and fear that they've lived with their whole lives knowing that they are living a lie. It's hard for me to explain because I'm not in their shoes, but when they discover who they really are you see the joy and the light turn on in them. How disappointing it is that when a person does not understand someone else, be it a transgendered person, gay person, straight person, etc..there always has to be an extreme that goes beyond the "topic"--in this case a memorial..to "that is disgusting". What we do not understand we demonize, and try to cover it under the kindness of being sorry for someone being killed. People are abused every day with words more than anything else..so these folks who have suffered and lost their lives due to the violent actions of someone else endured more verbal violence from those who thought they were "Disgusting". Why we always need to vilify someone else when we don't comprehend their life is beyond me. By putting anyone in a category we are placing a judgement on them that we have no right to do..aside from criminal actions, and even then, we can act in a way that is still human. Do cops beat a transgendered person just out of the blue? No. They do it because they have been raised in a society of people that say " thats disgusting' and that way of thinking feeds into their home grown biases... They go through extensive therapy before having surgery and not all of them have surgery. It's better than them killing themselves over it. Handle yours and let them handle theirs. People don't choose to have difficult lives. I'm so sorry for the loss of these lives. I have to say that there was a point in my life where I would have thought that Diamond was right on. I was raised with a very narrow view on life.
When I read about these people that were killed I think of my kids. What if it were them? I almost can't bear the thought. All I know is that no matter what my kids do or who they are I will love them with everything I have and everything that I am. This makes me sad. I hope that Diamond never has to deal with the horror of having a loved one killed because of who they are. If each of us were just a little more understanding and compassionate towards others no matter what this world would be a much better place. | |
