Ugh, I have to quit again and I'm so scared I'm going to get fat. sigh

I'm getting fat. Definitely. I've gone up a clothing size since I quit. I just packed away a bunch of clothes this weekend I no longer fit into.
But smoking is a billion times worse for me than being fat.
I can't say I'm happy about it, but eventually I'll deal with that on it's own.

I'm vain and going up another size is out of the question for me. I already feel like I should be one size less right now.

I normally don't smoke all week, but when the weekend is here then it's butts galore. Maybe if I ween myself off I'll be ok. I'm done with school this Monday and I will start the gym again, I don't smoke that often when I'm exercising regularly so we'll see. I can't rule out a smoke when I'm out having cocktails though.

Gaining weight is why I started smoking again after I quit last time. I had just lost a bunch and gained 10 pounds in a matter of weeks. So I panicked and started smoking again.
I gain weight at the drop of a hat anyway. shrug If I wanted to be sure not to gain weight I'd never have been able to quit.

I'll get skin rejuvenation...I"m going to learn how to do it soon!

I love to smoke when I go out. I'm not sure if I can give it up socially. I'm all for giving it up all week...but as soon as I have cocktail in hand it's over. And I'm not willing to give up my cocktails either!

omg...ok...what ever you say. lol
I wish I could just smoke socially...but that's an impossibility for me and about 99% of smokers/ex-smokers....if you can do it then, that's awesome...but it's a slippery slope. Someday you'll have to really quit. I used to think there was no way I'd be able to drink and not smoke, but it is possible. I only had to give up going to the bar (when you could smoke in side, well, you still can in an american legion) for a little while...a month or 2 maybe. after that it wasn't even that hard.

Congrats to you, Carrie, and to ALL the ex-smokers out there!

Question: You mention you're gaining weight, but why is that? Quitting smoking doesn't screw with your metabolism, does it? Is the weight gain because you may have replaced a fixation on smoking with increased snacking, etc? ...And if so, have you considered taking up a slightly more ambitious exercise regiment?

It's both! It slows down your metabolism and you eat more to replace the fixation.

Actually, quitting smoking does change your metabolism. That's one of the factors. Changing eating habits is another. Partly it's the oral fixation, partly it's cause I'm an emotional eater (I eat for comfort and I don't have smoking to comfort me anymore, quitting smoking is extremely depressive, etc.), and partly cause food starts to taste different. Better. So you're more liekly to eat.

Eventually I'll work on the weight thing again. One thing at a time, though.

Carrie I give you tons of credit, I just read my posts and not in one did I congratulate you! redface I think if you add a half hour to an hour of more exercise a day your metabolism won't dissipate as much. The eating for comfort is another hard habit to break though. I hope you can conquer each task! You can dooooo eeeeet!!!

Wow. I knew about substitutional fixation, but I never really thought about the physiological shifts (aside from gradually improving cardiovascular function). Nevertheless, one thing at a time, as you said -- and you certainly can succeed in this thing.

Again, I'm really happy to hear of your progress. clapping

...And thanks to both Carries for the info.

Yes. Nicotine is a stimulant and an appetite suppressant. I would always smoke instead of snacking, I never felt "full" until I smoked after a meal, all sorts of stuff.
