Depends. If he doesn't like it, he can fuck off. If he is allergic, I might be considering finding a new home for them, but only to adoptive owners that can give them as much attention and love as I can.

Dexter is looking at me right THIS moment and I gotta go over and cuddle him now.

I don't have dogs any more but I would never give them up for anyone. I pretty much share Herman's views.

Heh, as there is just ONE person that I know that has the love in her heart to take care of my rather odd kitties, it means everyone can just sod off and love them or be gone.

I asked this last month because a friend is going thru this... sad

If it's not a matter of health, I don't have a pet right now, but I don't think I could do it. hmph!

Hell no! I have always had cats and dogs in my life since the day I was born. They have always been considered part of my family. I could never get rid of one for a significant other. Luckily, I have never been asked to do it. I always gravitate towards animal lovers. My mom has given up her pets for a man and I think it is something that will always make her feel bad inside.
Her husband lied to her when they first got married. She had a Sharpei when they met. He never liked the dog, was never a dog person. She had skin allergies that were causing my mom stress but she was willing to care for her a she needed. My step dad said he found a women with a farm to give her to. My mom agreed to let him give her to this lady in hopes that the dog would be happier on the farm and away from him being mean to her. My mom found out from my step dad eight years later that there was never a women with a farm, he had her put to sleep.
I could never, ever trust a man that did that and kept the lie for that long.

For me it would depend. Whoever makes a worse mess on the carpet would probably be out.

I did.

My mother in law is severely allergic to cats, and we are basically the only family she has (Chris is an only child). When we moved here, we made the difficult decision to ask a friend to keep our kitty.

If it was someone I was gonna marry, I would. I would make sure he goes to a good home though.

but for a more casual relationship, I don't think I would, not unless it got pretty serious later down the track. AND I wouldn't do it if I got an ultimatum "me or the dog" mad only if he was allergic or even after trying to get along, they don't or something.

exactly, if he's tried and everything else hasn't worked then yeah, it would be time to find the dog or cat a new home...and an ultimatum would put his ass in the friend zone until time stood still.

no, i would not.

and if i was about to marry someone and they wanted me to give up my animals i still wouldn't. i would find it strange that someone who is ready to spend the rest of their life with me would all of a sudden want me to get rid of my animal.
