No. We can't shield everything from our kids and they will see bad things practically everywhere you go. I think the parent should teach the child that smoking is bad for you, but that we can't always control what other people do.

True, but the Wiggles' smoking seems a bit inappropriate. I wish they'd either quit or stop smoking during their shows.

hmm

You watch the Wiggles?

Kids will try to smoke to see what it is like. They generally will start due to peer pressure.

If cigarettes did not currently exist, and a tobacco company invented them, and the government figured out all the things that cigarettes would cause (more death, sickness, health costs, litter, etc, etc, etc), do you think there is any chance that cigarettes would be approved for manufacture and sale?

what does this have to do with retconning a movie about groucho marx so he's walks around wiggling a candy cane in his fingers?

my issue isn't with whether actors actually SMOKE in movies. use candy cigarettes. CGI the shit. it doesn't matter to me, it's acting.

but if the story calls for a character to be smoking and it is relevant, then for the love of bette davis an actor should be able to portray that.

i don't think old bugs bunny cartoons are suddenly offensive to children because a rabbit pretends to be smoking his carrot. if you think that's going to send a child racing toward a pack of lucky strikes, well...god bless you i guess. lol

Movies aren't really meant to show people acting right.

Should the Goonies have run off to find the treasure? Should Elliot really have kept an alien in his closet? Should the Kid have had sexual relations with that whore Appolonia?

Seeing it in the theater when I was 15, I was more scarred by the smoking than the boobage. neutral

So my position on the subject now is smoking = R rating; boobies = G rating. razz

Fauxie

Smoking is always blurred or pixelated on cable here in Thailand. They're fine holding the cigarette or cigar, but once it's lit and put to someone's lips it's gone. Same goes for drug use and guns pointed at someone's head. And yet, movies are put on at all times of day, regardless of rating, so it's possible to see a guy smoking a cigarette all blurred out, before saying 'fucking cunt', at 9am in the morning. lol disbelief I believe there's a youtube video that shows just this, but since I can't find it, here's American Dad:

So stupid. lol

On the nite of my grad my friends and I drove out to a farm to party. I saw a 6 year old girl (I asked her how old she was) smoking a cigarette, I shit you not. I was like omg eek you'll destroy your lungs!

In what way could smoking a cigarette be relevant to ANYTHING?

well, i stated one example in my previous post. if you're doing a film biography of someone like groucho marx, there is no way you can make the film without him walking around holding a cigar.

same with george burns.

same with a lot of celebrities of yesteryear. do we just magically re-image them as non-smokers, even if their smoking was part of their persona or trademark?

and should we change the lyrics of frosty the snowman to take away his "corncob pipe"?

i just think this kind of revisionism is depressing and unnecessary 99.9% of the time.

Try watching the TV show Mad Men without the smoking. It totally wouldn't work. nod

ya know what? personally, i'd be much more supportive of a rule that said guns can be depicted in R rated movies only.
