One of my faves I remember from reading in high school (and I don't want to hear it, 9s!):

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast.

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold.

-- William Carlos Williams

I love that poem as well. I like the "so sweet/ and so cold" part.

I am such a runt
I called her a cunt
If Gatorade is cold, how do you serve it?
I dunno, but I suppose she deserved it.

Of all the thing you could say at this moment
You said 'You brought this onto yourself'
Like I wanted to wear this Spiderman outfit
To your momma's funeral, but the voices told me
So I obeyed
Same thing with the tropical fish of your daddy
Everybody knows they taste like shit
Yet 'Ate them' they said, and that's what I did
I wish they tasted like chicken
But no.

A Dream Within A Dream
Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Hey Eric, let me ask you a question.

What do you think of straight couples who refuse to get married until marriage rights are granted to everyone?

Speaking as a woman whose last serious relationship was same-gender, meaning I would not have been allowed to marry my ex-partner, I think it's kind of silly and self-serving. It doesn't really help anyone. I'd rather spend my time contacting my elected officials, voting on the issues, donating to marriage-rights organizations, and raising awareness in other ways instead of calling attention to myself by playing some kind of me-too victimization game.

What do you think?

my absolue honest opinion is marraige is a religious institution that the government should have no role in and anything reconginzed by the government should be a civil union or a domestic partnership.

i've sat on the fence on this issue because i've seen the pros and cons of both. For instance in CA Domestic Partnership gives gay couples all the rights and benifits of marriage, it's a slightly more diffcult proess but it does. the only thing is we all have grown up in America where if you fall in love with someone you get married so I see the attachment to the word.

i think it's a nice sign of solidarity between those couples that chose to do that and their gay brothers and sisters, but unless it's alot of people doing it doens't really make a statement.

the best thing i think anyone can do is to reach out to people they know who have a different opinion and work to changing their mind, dontating money to the cause and voting progressive. Outside of my famly my impact with a straight person is limited because my life is so sterotypically gay they'd write me off as just a crazy gay.

i'm truely happy for you two, just took me a while post on your wedding thread cause i'm so wreced by what has happened this week.

At the moment it's "Me Gusta Cuando Callas" by Pablo Neruda

.

This isn't the greatest translation, but shrug...

(I like you when you are still because it is as if you were absent,
and you hear me from afar, and my voice does not touch you.
Your eyes seem to have flown
And a kiss seems to have closed your mouth.

Like all things that are filled with my soul
You emerge from the things, filled with my soul.
Butterfly of your dream, you are like my soul,
and you are like a sad world.

I like you when you are still and it is as if you are distant.
And it is as if you are complaining, a butterfly cooing.
And you hear me from afar, and my voice does not reach you.
Allow me to be still in your silence.

Allow me to speak to you, too, with your silence
clear like a lamp, simple like a ring.
You are like the night, still and constellated.
Your silence is that of a star, as distant and plain.

I like when you are still because it is as if you are absent.
Remote and sad as if you had died.
One word then, one smile suffices.
And I am happy, happy that it's not true.)

INTERNATIONAL LOVE AFFAIR

Kissing you on the couch
In a smoky, dim lit carnival
All became tame, all became subdued
Lost under the spell of your innocence

I begin to make sense of my neurosis
My madness, my feelings of tragic
Become bearable, tamable and null
Your lips are like mittens

Of this could be what fantasies are made?
Your religion is a mix of my hope
Escaping in your arms, your masculine charm
Thank the world for this moment

Or in a cab reserved for luxury
Would you escort me to your interior
Decorated in gray and black
Smile like Herb Ritts, arms elicit
A feeling of ecstasy unreserved
Unbridled in how I feel

Thank you for this limited moment
This rare, not compromised, uncomplicated moment.

Could I import you?
Could I xerox you
Trap you in a box and preserve you
Or this. Make this continually mine.

It is so fine.

Still I Rise
Maya Angelou

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise

If
Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
