USFL returns

Don't know if it's been mentioned or not but the USFL is returning in 2010 (United States Football League). For those of you who don't remember the league only lasted 3 years in the early 80's. Some big names that played in the league were Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Reggie White, Herschel Walker, and Doug Flutie to name a few. Donald Trump was the owner of the New Jersey Generals. My favorite Team were the Pittsburgh Maulers (even though they only played one season). The cities that will have a team so far are LA, Las Vegas, San Jose, Portland, San Antonio, Orlando, Arkansas, New York, Baton Rouge. There will be 3 more spots open and cities in the bidding are Dallas, Houston, Salt lake city, Cincinnati, Memphis, Mississippi, New Jersey and Alabama.

Jim Kelly was the QB for that team. I thought they had a cool helmet.

I remember the USFL for many reasons.....first, because of all the hoopla surrounding the New Orleans Breakers signing Marcus DuPree, who at the time was the first college freshman to sign for a pro football league....yep, he turned out to be all hype, no substance....

...and second, because many ex-USFLers became New Orleans Saints (Bobby Hebert, Sam Mills, Vaughn Johnson, Jim Mora, Sr.) and my team FINALLY FINALLY, after 20 years, FINALLY posted a winning season...and when they were done, became a part of the most successful era in Saints history...mushy

Hopefully, the USFL lasts longer this time.....

I hope that they don't try to "beat" the NFL...but I'd rather watch football than early season baseball....its a diversion to me....

For real???!!!!

Man, I was a huge fan of the USFL. I loved the names; Showboats, Outlaws, Maulers, Breakers, Stars, Panthers, Express, and my favorite team the Tampa Bay Bandits!!

I hope they bring the USFL back. Those were the days. Football all year around.

It's for real. Check out there web site, they call it the new USFL. I hope some of the old teams will be back (since LA already is getting a team why not get the LA Express back.)

Yes I do like the NFL more, but there is room for 2 leagues (plus it's nice to cities that don't have a pro team get one,), USFL will play summer time I guess (like they did before). XFL World football league/NFL Europe all sucked. USFL was great and had alot of good players. Who knows maybe Michael Vick will get job here once he gets out. Oh yeah everybody over time will be played like college.

I hope that some of the old teams can come back, as well. I just looked at the website. You know Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Orlando will have a nice squads going into the season.

As long as the new leadership of the league doesn't try to take on the NFL, it should be a good show...

Well as long as they don't play the same time as the NFL does. I see no problem with them trying to draft high quality players from college. Another good thing is that it gives players an option, Duante Culpepper couldn't find a team so was force sit out last season. If USFL was around I'm sure he could have sign with them. Also who knows maybe Michael Vick could sign with the USFL when he gets out, that would make things interesting.

Well, you could argue that was only the second most successful era in Saints history. Remember, those two playoff wins in Saints history occurred in this decade.

That is true...however, the post USFL era brought us our first winning season and playoff appearance (12-3, W/C loss to Minnesota, 1987) and ended that run with 62 wins total, our first division title, and 3 more playoff appearances...so comparatively speaking, this decade, even with those two playoff wins, runs second in my mind...because growing up in New Orleans and enduring all of the ridicule that came with rooting for the black and gold, that first winning season was like having your birthday and Christmas wrapped up and celebrated on Mardi Gras day...

...not to mention the Dome Patrol, who (quite charitably, I might add) were named as the best linebacking corps in NFL history by that show on NFL Network "Top 10"...

I can understand some wanting a year round fix of football but truthfully
i can enjoy leisure during the summer months without some off brand football
league. The XFL did nothing for me. I don't even pay attention to arena football. During the Nfl's offseason and the draft, i think it just pumps
you up more when it comes back round in August. The USFL was a good league in it's time which were the early 1980's but now the nfl is more powerful and stronger than ever and i think the best will want to play in the best league and i wouldn't be interested in the USFL a second time.

Well the debate of good players will only want to go to the NFL was also a factor then as well (that will never change). Well money is always a factor and the USFL was able to lure big name players such as Steve Young, Reggie White, Doug Flutie, Jim Kelly and Herschel Walker. There will be unknown players who will come out of no where and become future stars.
