Anyone ever buy art?

and by Art I mean actual paintings that are either pre-done or you have personally commissioned?

Naw, I'm broke. But buying some real artwork is probably one of the first things I'd do if I ever have the money.

I have 1 original a friend of mine made me many years ago in my kitchen, 2 pieces of art by a local artist in my living room, one print (of a really great painting) by a local artist in my dining room and one print (of another really great painting) that I got when I was in Miami that is stamped and signed by the artist that I've yet to have framed and hung.

I have 2 pieces that aren't exactly originals (but I love 'em) that are hanging in my living room. They're kind of McArt in the sense that one is from Ikea and the other I've seen in various cool framing and art stores around the world.

I have never commissioned art.

At present I have the means to purchase original art, but have yet to do so.

I do see myself doing so, just have not seen the right work yet.

Love me some Erte. mushy They had this hanging in the local Saks which has a gallery in it. So I've been wanting it for about 5 years. It finally came up at auction last month and I won. woot!

But I DID wanna hang it in my room since it's where I spend most of my time. However, when the art consultant walked in we tried it in the entry and it was right at home. nod

SO! Doesn't mean you can't hang it over your headboard...

but I like the entryway better... it's kinda like the double black diamonds they post at the start of a really difficult ski run... lol

Well if that's the case then I need to move it to my room to let dudes know to proceed with caution. wink lol

Here's another one that's in my bedroom. I had my eye on this for a few years too and bought it right after Gordon Parks died two years ago.

So those that do buy,do you have a dollar limit that you are willing to spend or is it more, you love it,and don't care how much it is,as long as it becomes yours?

Depends. . . I try to have a general budget I stay within. But there's nothing wrong with just keeping your eye on something for awhile and saving up for it. I buy most of my stuff on auction through my favorite gallery because you can save 30-40% on the regular price. If I love it and it speaks to me but it's outta my price range I tell myself that if it's meant to be I'll have it some day but I ain't going into debt to acquire it.

Yes, I've bought art before. Nothing too extravagant--mostly just things from artists I've worked with or am friends with.

My advice (and the advice I always hear from professional collectors) is don't worry about buying art for an investment or counting on it appreciating in value--it's most important to buy things that you love or that "speaks" to you.

Can't afford to. sigh

However, we have some framed posters around by Thomas McKnight, Jack Vettriano & Diego Rivera.

This is hanging over our bed;

My wife bought it when we were first married...poster $40, frame $200. disbelief

I used to work at an art gallery (chain) and I loved being surrounded by all that great art all day. Best job I ever had.
Too bad I sucked at selling art & made no money. sigh

I've bought from R. Virbrickas (sp), this Lithuanian painter on eBay.

His stuff is really great. He paints with a knife and you can see each spot of paint distrinctly sculpted into the whole. It's rather beautiful. Once I got 2 of his paintings, I knew I couldn't go back to prints. He sends you an authenticity certificate too.

thumbs up! That's real nice. It reminds me of the work of this young Russian artist named Alexei Butirskiy.

I came across his work in a local gallery but he's sold internationally. The unique thing about Alexei's stuff is that he uses a special paint on areas that represent light and it glows in the dark. When the consultant put the painting in a dark room and dimmed the lights it was breathtaking. I think that after I complete my collections of certain artists I'll be moving on to him next. woot!

These are my favorites

nod That's my favorite but the pic does it no justice. I'm really into detail and this looked like a photograph. And when they hung it in another room with the lights on a dimmer it took this to whole new dimension. Further illustrating why ighting is key when you hang a picture.

Thanks for all the responses. I am thinking of commissioning a piece, but wasn't sure whether or not the price was to steep, but the artist has now agreed to sweeten the deal by paying for all packing, and shipping, but it does make me wonder if he just really wants to make it as reasonable as possible so that I can have a piece of his art,or if he is really hard up for money. hmmm

Alexei's stuff is that he uses a special paint on areas that represent light and it glows in the dark.

Glow in the dark paint! I am definately going to have to check out his work. nod
