Mature Students in University

I love them. I do.
I get along great with older students, hearing about their experience whether it be educationally related or otherwise.
They're a great part of the classroom experience.

BUT, what I don't like, is the older women who come into University as a mature student and try to teach the classes themselves - especially because they've had said experience.

I'm in lecture right now, and this woman - who've i've been friends with for a few years now - is trying to tell everyone how to feel about a certain piece because SHE experienced it back then, and SHE knows how it all went.

That just doesn't jive well with me.

She's a mother. And she's beginning to mother everyone that gets close to her.
The way she speaks to people is very forceful - and even rude. And she's been really imposing on others lately.

I'm not asking for advice. This is a common sense situation and I know when I get the chance to address the situation, I will.

I'm just mad. And the org probs has room for yet another venting thread.
I really don't care if this goes anywhere.

And NOOOO I'm not bashing mature students. I hope all of you took the chance to READ what I wrote first off. So before you come and post telling me off for my own opinions, read it over a few.

I'm a "mature" student. mad

I can see how that would be annoying. I am not a mom when I go to class. I'm just a student like everyone else.

But, the thing that is so annoying to me are the younger students that obviously are rude and don't give a crap about the class. I had to work hard to pay for my education. They can at least stop talking throughout the whole class so I can listen to my professor peacefully. rolleyes

I feel like slapping those stupid kids and telling them that if they would shut up and listen to the teacher maybe you'd get a better grade on your test. These are kids that whined when we got our first anatomy test back and they all failed. hah!

I ruined their chances of getting a curve. I was the only one to get an "A".

Sho'nuff!

I just don't like how she's just stomping around calling the shots just because she's older than most of our professors.

It looks bitchy.
She interrupts some of my conversations while I'm talking to others.

She was never like this before. She must be going through something right now, she has been for the past year or so. But I thought she'd have a better hold on her social interactions by now seeing that she's playing it off like she knows how to act all the time

disbelief

it's not cute.

Just tell her not to hog the classroom with her opinions. If she starts with "when I was young... blablabla" just tell her sweetly you are young NOW and can experience art without her experience.

i knew i was going to get at least once response like that.

my answer. not every young student has tuition payed for them by mommy and daddy.

i, too, at 22, have worked my ASS off for any tuition i've payed for since second year.

i see what you're saying too.
and i see it in the first year classes i'm in.

just sayin'.

I think her age has nothing to do with it... I bet she was just as bossy at 20 as she is now. Some people just have control issues and find any excuse to impose their opinions on others. Assholes that can't see past the ends of their own noses.

Seems to be one or the other. Either a getting a response from the class is like pulling teeth ("2 plus 2 is?? Anyone? fffffooouuuuu? Anyone?") or one student won't shut up.
