clean everything (bleach, mr. clean and lysol - the holy cleaning trinity)
get a copy of the lease
make sure that anything discussed OUTSIDE of the lease, is handwritten onto the lease and initialled by the landlord/property manager
inspect the WHOLE property
start small with furniture, sometimes you just don't know if you'll have enough room
when you move your boxes in, put the boxes in the room they belong in (but that goes without saying really)
shampoo the carpets if necessary
paint if you need to

oh, check the water pressure all over the house
make sure the toilet actually flushes!
and on top of keeping your doors locked - change the locks if the landlord hasn't already.

Like your landlord, (if the landlord is on the property) nothing's worse than living with an overly fussy landlord.

all good advice on the thread so far, make sure your windows, and smoke alarms and appliances (if included) are in working order. Plan to do stuff to save on heating costs now, if heat isn't inc. in the rent.

Ok well first off, if you don't trust your landlord as it is, then maybe you shouldn't be living there.

Your landlord is supposed to change the locks every time he has a new tenant...but bare in mind that he has every right to have a key for it as well.

However, he's not allowed to enter without letting you know he is going to do it.

  • Find out what utilities are included.
  • Ask if it's air-conditioned.
  • Avoid a walk-up, if possible.
  • Try and avoid units near common elements (elevators, garbage chutes, gyms, etc.).
  • Keep in mind that you might have neighbors on either side of you, plus above and below. Does sound travel easily between the units?
  • Is a locker and/or parking included?
  • Read the lease thoroughly. Show it to somebody who's rented several times!

Don't move out until/unless you've saved some money.

I lived at home after college. My parents didn't make me pay rent, but my mother insisted I give her a certain amount of money every month that she deposited in a savings account for me. So when I moved out about a year-and-a-half later, I had enough money to pay the security deposit on an apartment, and buy everything I needed (including furniture) to set up housekeeping. cool

Fortunately, I was working loooong hours at my first job - and only one of my sisters was living at home at the time. (The other two were at school.) I was hardly ever at home, anyway.

Make sure you budget. It'll take a few months to get adjusted.

Buy a new toilet seat.

I am very sure he doesn't and that's a good thing nod.I remember when there was a water damage in my apartment when my sister lived in it years ago while she was on vacation and the firebrigade broke into the apartment when neighbours called them.
