I come from a large family (4 sisters and one brother) & I considered ourselves lower middle class, not exactly poor,but probably just enough to get by. I remember these moments from my childhood:

Eating dinner fast enough so you're guaranteed seconds.

Receiving 2nd hand toys from our cousins who were just as poor, but being glad we were getting anything at all.

One year, Mom couldn't afford a Turkey for Thanksgiving and prepared two chickens instead.

Of course, since there were six kids, yearly Birthday parties were very rare.

...when every month, you alternate having lights or a phone because when one gets paid, the other gets cut off...

...when the only people calling your house are bill collectors...

...when you come home from work and find a 24 hour notice of eviction on your door because you're two months late with rent...

...when you learn 55 different Ramen noodle recipies....

you sleep four to a bed.

your apartment is heated by the stove.

your mother cooks on a hotplate because the gas is off.

you go to bed hungry.

you live with rats and it doesn't phase you.

you live in an four bedroom apartment with 15 people.

you have to choose between paying the bills and eating.

I won't post other shit because it breaks my heart. I will agree with my dear friend Slave, don't forget where you came from and help others whenever possible.
