trees on my travels around the world, i have noticed that many countries choose to paint the base of tree trunks white. now whats up with that.
does any one know why ? is this a stupid question? or is the white stripe supposed to make the tree look more glam. could it be a go faster stripe, like the one's essex boy's sport on their ford escorts. but then that couldn't be right, because trees don't move but then those go faster srtipes don't make those essex boys go any faster either. help me.. i want to know ? and yes i was to lazy to learn the lingo, so i couldn't ask any of the natives.

Trunk protective materials are applied at planting for many reasons. These reasons fall into two categories:
~Physical protection from equipment, animals, insects, people, herbicides and reduction of suckering. ~Environmental modification for protection from sunscald and frost cracks and bark moisture conservation especially for thin-barked trees. Improper selection to the preventative problem may actually do more harm than good. Anyways...

I asked a similar question when I first moved to Minnesota. I couldn't understand why some of the trees were graced with a band of sheet metal...
Did the trees in Minnesota wear jewelry? j/k...but I didn't know why,so I asked! It's to keep the squirrels off the trees.

Keeps the critters away -- especially squirrels.

No And I thought MPLS was the shit... if the squirrels can't climb the trees in MPLS where do they live ? do they have special squirrel kennels, like dogs? and why aint the squirrels allowed to climb the trees, MPLS must have some serious squirrel hating thang going on. if there are any squirrels from MPLS out there, i'd like ta hear about yo pain

if there are any squirrels from MPLS out there, i'd like ta hear about yo pain Ahhh, but I said some trees. There are more trees than lakes in Minnesota So trust me, no need for squirrels to go into therapy or nuttin.

White colour? Maybe to reflect the sun from the trunks.
I have seen trees in other countries wearing hats and veils! Large canvases draped over the branches and leaves, I think this is to protect the fruit in the summer. I love trees and nature too... God Bless Our Trees!

Actually, I do believe that some people do use it as a decorative option..., why they choose white... I don't know.

Beautiful Day... P.s. Trees are vital. Nature is my love. Yes, I guess I have had way too much time on my hands! I like talking to people, and where better than to post stuff you wouldn't normally get into with a large group! Freespirit

God Bless Our Trees! a tree wearing a hat .. damn .. what kinda hat was it .. was it a baseball cap or something more funky like a peaked fedora tilted to the side.. or maybe it was the tea cosy kind that rastafarians sport to keep their dreadlocks all clean. man i like hats

Where I live, many of the trees (especially "weed trees") have part of their trunks painted white. I was told it was to keep the tree from growing since trees can cause serious plumbing problems with their roots. I'm not sure if it is true or not, though.

Wouldn't white stripes make the tree more visible
at night? That's what i always thought, to prevent a vehicle from ramming the poor tree. Maybe it's more reflective of the headlight beams. Oh, i really don't know... Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
