Don't think about fear.

Think about SEX.

You cannot be scared and horny at the same time.

Good luck

it's natural to feel nervous, speaking before a crowd nod .. alot of folks are nervous about that... take deep breathes, relax, speak and just be yourself, it will all work out nod ... I know cause I've spent alot of my time on a stage before crowds lol.. I sang in clubs awhile back ago

Can't help you there. I gave so many speeches as part of my job and in school that I don't have any fear whatsoever in doing public presentations.

one thing that makes things so much easier, is to know your subject inside and out. that way, when you're giving the speech you can do so as if you're just having a 'conversation' with a bit of structure. there's nothing worse than listening to someone who may or may not know what they're talking about who is just 'reading que cards'.

Public speaking is a science. While some of us (myself included) have certain natural abilities that help in public speaking, there is a lot one can do to help themselves.

1. Know your stuff. This is THE most important thing to do if you want to be successful.
2. Practice, Practice, Practice. Have your speech ready ahead of time, and practice it in front of a mirror (or wall if the mirror is weird) as many times as it takes until you work out a performance. Remember, giving a speech is a form of theatre; treat it that way. You wouldn't go on stage in a play without rehearsing your lines.
3. DO NOT, I repeat do not imagine people in their undies or think about sex. It is distracting (and if you are a male it can give you an erection).
4. Recover from your mistakes. If you mess something up, move on.
5. Remember that you are not the center of the universe. Many people are afraid to give too good of a speech because it could lead to people calling them a showboater or something. Remember that nobody really cares (I mean that in the nicest way)

Finally, although voice is not something that can be worked on too much, you can try to find the right volume if you practice with a friend. I actually measured the room that I used to give speeches in and had friends sit that far away when I practiced my speeches.

Kick Ass on Thursday! Remember that Prince is the stage master and you are a fan of him.

My best advice is either :

* Only focus on one friend. Tell them you're gonna just look at them the whole time and get them to either smile at you or remain expressionless.

* Remember that there's a good chance the majority aren't listening to you anyway but worrying about their own speeches. I know I don't listen to anyone else's if I have one to do! biggrin I find pretending no one cares about what I'm saying helps relax my nerves, because the nerves come from that "what if people notice a mistake?"

BlueZebra

* know your subject
www.presentationzen.com
www.slideology.com

and learn how the human brain works.

If you're in a classroom full of people that have given or have to give a speech for some assignment, chances are they are all crapping their pants and they will be very sympathetic to you.

If you have the chance to practice, use video. Tape yourself. Tweak your facial expression, your body language, the tone of your voice ...

If it is a short talk, check out systems like Pecha Kucha and Ignite, you'll blow them away with that.

Also, if this is something you do for a living or will do for a living sooner or later, you can join a local Toastmasters chapter (www.toastmasters.com)
