Woman walks through market holding severed head of man

Crowds in a busy market fled in terror as a woman walked among them holding aloft the severed head of a man who had attacked her.

Covered in blood, she held the head high like a trophy, said police - her way of showing that she had delivered her own kind of justice to her attacker.

The gruesome scene was played out in Makkapurva village, 170 miles south east of the Indian city of Lucknow, where, last night, the woman was being held behind bars.

According to police officer Ram Bharose, the unnamed 35-year-old woman had sliced off the man's head with a sickle she had been using to cut grass near her village.

'She was getting grass for her cattle when the man came up from behind her and tried to sexually assault her,' said Mr Bharose.
'In a bid to save her dignity, she turned on him and during a struggle managed to chop off his head with the sickle.

'We have no doubts about her story because she had bite marks on her neck and cheek when the man tried to take advantage of her sexually.'

So determined was the woman to show that she had beaten off her attacker, who she claimed had been stalking her for three months, that she decided to take his head immediately to the local market.
'She put the head on parade,' said Mr Bharose. 'She walked right through all the crowds who were buying their vegetables, holding the head up high.

'All her clothes were covered in blood, but as far as she was concerned that didn't matter. She just wanted to make a point and she definitely succeeded in doing that.

'Everybody scattered. It was a very terrifying sight.' Mr Bharose said the woman had no regrets about her actions.

'We have to follow the letter of the law and although she says she acted in self defence she will probably be charged with culpable homicide,' said the police officer.

Quite frankly you all disappoint me with your applause for this outrageous act. I don't care if he tried to rape her or not, she shouldn't have paraded a severed head through that marketplace. Food is sold there, so who knows what contamination could've occurred. Not to mention potential slip hazards with the blood. I mean did she consider this or perform a risk assessment of any kind before her selfish act?

Personally, I was horrified. It is one thing to fight off an attacker- even wound him with the machete. It is an entirely different matter to completely separate his head from his body!
Maybe she was in shock when she stumbled into town with it, but omfg

I'm torn with this....on the one hand, I'm glad that she stood her ground and fought him off...the fact that he lost his head is collateral damage in my mind...

...however, on the other hand, I'm a bit amazed that folks are cheering the fact that she cut his head off and paraded it down mainstreet.... I shudder to think of the responses(as a man) if this story had been about some guy who caught his wife cheating and lopped her head off and paraded it down mainstreet...

That is not an even comparison, it would be if a man was going to be attacke, raped, murdered and fought back by killing the male or female attacker

As far as parading the head around men while they do get attacked simply arn't raped in the numbers women are and I think it's heroic for her to show the world what she did

See, thats what I have an issue with...it appears that it doesn't happen to men more often because men don't REPORT it as much as it happens...and my point isn't to compare on a statistical basis....the first part of my post clearly states that I, too, am glad that she fought him off, head be gone or not...but at the same time, if (as in my example) had lopped off his wife/girlfriends head, the outcry about violence against women would be deafening...he wouldn't be lauded or held up as some kind of hero

and while we're on that point, "hero" is quickly becoming one of my least favorite words...because it is severely overused and misapplied....in this case, IMHO (emphasis on M) "heroic" would've been her lopping off the guy's head if he was attacking a classroom full of schoolgirls....THAT is heroic...

I think it was self-defense. Parading the head through the market let everyone know what happened. He is probably a local problem that nothing was done about.
I'm sure she wasn't shaking it over food. But she made the point that this man would be no one else's problem. I don't think a jury would convict her in the United States.

Contamination minimal. It's also India, You'll probably encounter a lot more in a market . . .
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Is the wife/girlfriend trying to overpower and rape or murder the man in your comparison?

The woman in india beheaded the man to save herself.....she marched it thru the market to save other women, that is what makes her heroic to me

She had a sickle. It's a long blade. He had to be aware she had a sickle. You're not gonna hide it in your bra.
If this is an attacker, she can't kill him in self defense? With the sickle it was easier to sever his head than to hold him off with the sickle. It's not that type of weapon (made for holding anyone off).
It ain't right . . . but I understand.

That applies to parading it through the market also. They know why she had his head. She finally did something about the problem.
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

First off, does it really matter? We're talking about walking around with a severed head (which is a pretty extreme image), not what caused it to be severed...of course, there's no comparison between her reality and my example...

The article said the he was stalking HER for three months....not that he was a serial rapist or attacker...again, as I said, I'm glad she fought him off and he paid the price for his actions...and as I said, whether she cut his head off or his leg or whatever isn't a matter of real importance to me because he wouldn't have lost his head if he wouldn't have put himself in that position, regardless of whatever she had handy to use as a weapon...the point that caused me some pause was her being held up like she's some kind of hero...she took care of herself...she defended herself...so kudos to her...but to me, her parading around with the severed head (besides being in shock) is her way of saying to other MEN "don't fuck with me...don't try it with me!!", not "I did this, not just for me, but for all the women of this town"...

and again, this is strictly MY interpretation based on what is in the story...

I can't believe you just compared a wife cheating on her husband to a man attacking and trying to rape a woman. Disgusting. Why did you use that as an example? I think it says alot about your views. The appropriate comparison is a woman trying to attack and harm a man and in that case people would applaud him too. Of course the repsonses would be outrage if a man cut the head off a wife that cheated.

I did not compare the acts of rape/cheating...I was talking more to the heads being cut off...if you read my post completely instead of picking out a sentence and turning into a comparison, then you'd see what I'm saying....personally, I think its disgusting that you take a statement and make a complete assessment of my views or anything that I might feel about anything...what do you know about my life or anything other than words on a Prince fan site? Would you be able to figure out that I had a cousin who was raped, beaten and murdered? Or maybe that more than one of my friends suffered through a sexual assault? Of course not...but then, who am I to question your character judging capabilities?

If you want to slam my opinion on this thread, by all means, do so...but don't presume to attack my character or my views when you wouldn't know me anymore than you'd know the Dali Lama....

oh...my bad...now you'll think that I compared myself to the Dali Lama....

So all that and you didnt explain why you used that as the example. And of course it was a comparison. Why else would you say you're amazed at people cheering this and then go on to say you'd hate to see the reactions of another situation which involves a cheating wife. Meaning you think it's a double standard which would imply the scenario's are equal. Thats a comparison. Otherwise the reactions of the cheating wife scenario wouldn't matter because it's an entirely different situation. Oh and bringing up friends and family that have been abused doesnt mean you cant possibly have certain veiws.

Show me where I said it was a double standard....the reaction I spoke of was HERE on the org....period...as I've said, in response to you and to ThirdandFinal, my point is and has been THE SEVERED HEAD...not her fending off a rapist...not the ficticious cheater...I didn't once say that the rape even compared....my point of comparison was a man walking down the street with the severed head of a woman, regardless of what caused him to take it...and people raising him up as a hero for doing it....

...and for the record, I work as an Equal Opportunity Advisor/Sexual Assault Response Coordinator in the Army...so I think that my work has been formed by my views...and my views fuel my work...and most definitely what happened to my friends and family defined my views and inspired my work...
