Why the fuck would I want to be "feared", or anyone for that matter?

Lame.

To have my children fear me is close to the last thing I can imagine wanting

Healthy respect as their parent yes, fear - not

As a Soldier...a Master Sergeant to be (got selected for promotion in September...woot!) I've found that if you're loved (too much) as a leader, there are some who will take your kindness for weakness, which if left unchecked will undermine your whole program....so for me, I'd rather be feared...loathed.....despised....because at the end of the day, my mission gets accomplished

Loved. Sometimes people actually find me intimidating (for reasons that I don't really understand), and I don't like it.

This is very true...it's the ultimate goal of leadership...but in terms of this thread, it is something that is gained equally through love and fear....because there are those who respect you because they like/love you....and those who respect you despite the fact that they wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire....

In my line of business, I don't have time to worry about hurting someone's feelings or having someone questioning my decisions if there is some serious shit about to hit the fan....when I was in Iraq, my whole team was tight...we loved each other....but early on in the deployment, when I made decisions there were a couple of folks who figured because we were tight, they could take their time doing what needed to be done...which if we were under fire or being attacked, would've cost lives....

....so for me, its far from lame....

What does this have to do with fear?

Fear of repercussions if they don't follow the leader....

No, I don't see that as being about fear at all. I see it as being about respect and there is a huge difference in my opinion.

And just to try and look at it as fear. I don't think that's even about *you* being feared, it's about them fearing what could actually happen (safety-wise) if they don't follow the leader.

Agreed to an extent....but...

...in the military, the rank and the individual, depending on the situation, aren't so interchangeable...and carrying the rank that I do, the fear also comes from the amount of power and control I wield that can determine the fate of their careers...still, I can see and accept what you're sayin'...
