It's not that I've had bad experiences and they've led me to "give up on finding love". I think my feelings on the subject can best be summed up by a quotation from the Bruce Springsteen song Dry Lightning:

She said "Ain't nobody gonna give nobody
What they really need anyway"

"Love" is marketed as a panacea. Most people's ideas about what it's supposed to be and do are taken from fiction. When it inevitably doesn't measure up to those portrayals, too many think there's something wrong with their relationship (rather than the yardstick) and go looking for something they're never going to find.

Or somethin' like that. razz

well you know people who expect everyone else to be the ones that bend (knowing full well they won't) and pretty much let other people shape their lives? they can always blame someone else for their misery. Hard to explain what I mean exactly lol

Take for example my mum, all she ever does is whine about my dad. Not once has she taken a stand and made a decision for herself - her life is basically just going along with what he decides, and I know for a fact he is not an unreasonable person, it's just with no resistance (from her) he really does think his way is the only way.
So she lives in a house (a NEW house) that she doesn't really like
Goes to holiday destinations she doesn't much care for etc.
Ask her why, she can always say "you know, your father rolleyes "

Just to be clear, I'm not talking domestic violence or emotional abuse here either, that is something different entirely.

Learning to be happy no matter what your circumstances or environment.

Learning to touch peace and gratitude no matter what the people around you are doing or saying.

There's no one way to find that. For me, meditation has helped tremendously and has taught me to find that place through breathing and focusing my attention. And although I don't call myself a Christian, focusing on the trials that Jesus Christ endured really helps me put my own struggles in perspective. I make sure I am consciously focusing on what I am thankful for every single day, and make sure that I'm not magnifying my own pains and burdens.

So for me, gratitude
is a way to happiness. Being humble and appreciating what I have.

Agreed.

Hmm that might work for some people, but it doesn't work for me. But thanks for explaining.

I don't mean to offend you or anything, but it sounds like you mom is just settling for your dad. How can she ever be happy just going along with what he wants to do all the time? Its like she is throwing a big piece of her away just to make somebody else happy instead of making herself happy. I can say this because this use to be me in my last relationship that I just broke off. I can say that I did voice the things that I wanted to do with him, but he always used a bunch of excuses on we could do this next week, or that next year, but that was all bullshit because he just wanted me to go along with whatever he wanted to do all the time, and I did. It took me a while to realize what was "really" going on, but thank god I finally opened my eyes and left that behind for good. Life is too short being miserable at somebody else's expense.

not at their expense, my dad is really happy! she does everything for him.
I totally agree with everything you've said
We have been telling her for years, stop the whining and leave him if he is that bad, but she won't.
