Whether it snows or not, it still gets down to the 40s. That's cold!! lol

No, it is, and at night in the winter it dips into the 20s sometimes. . but not the kind of cold that you can't kill with a space heater and blankets.

I suppose.

It still seems, I don't know, really unstable. lol What about tornadoes? Hurricanes? Floods??? (Ok, you're probably better off than most in a flood, I'll give you that one. rolleyes )

We don't have those! All we've got are earthquakes. Which come with the possibility of tsunamis, but in that case you're better off on a boat than you would be with, say, waterfront property.

And if I really felt like it was unsafe to be on the boat for some reason, I know people who like it when I stay with them. People in Seattle, even. biggrin

I don't know that I'd want to attempt this on such minimalist terms someplace where I didn't know anybody. I'd want to be able to borrow a bathtub, and maybe do more complicated food prep in somebody's kitchen once a week or something.

the boat i lived on had a nice little kitchen & a nice bathroom, same as a small apt. would have. i don't see a big difference between living on a boat or living in a studio apt.???? i say if you're single, and want to try it, go for it! it's fun!

How long did you do it? Why did you stop? smile

Carrie, if it makes you feel like I'm a less alien creature, I'll confess to my biggest concern: wardrobe! lol

I'm happy to get rid of my furniture and crap, and even (reluctantly) my books, but I still need to wear clothes! Shoes! Handbags! Eek! I expect to spend most of my days in scrubs in the not-too-distant future, but I still wanna look cute on weekends. Doing this would probably require that I talk somebody I know into letting me mooch a little closet space.

Sheeit! at that price I'd buy it just to have it... and yeah if you can live like you're camping for months & months on end then I say go for it... most sailors are Dharma Bums anyway so enjoy!

and there's nothing, truly nothing like living on the water... I've overnighted several times and waking up on the water is one of the greatest joys in lief.

Get a van or find a good friend who'll loan or rent you some garage space, if worse comes to worse there's always public storage...

Yeah, while renting storage would kinda go against the spirit of this arrangement, it would still be cheaper to rent moorage + storage than to pay the rent on my apartment.

There would be something to be said for getting a different car. I currently have, and LURVE love , a little convertible. But were I living on a boat, I think I'd get enough fresh air. lol Getting a VW van sort of thing would give me an extra room to work with. And continue the mobile house idea. Not a bad idea. hmmm

I suppose I can get behind getting rid of most of your worldly possessions. I have almost none anyway.

But yeah, clothes, handbags, shoes and books would be a problem. For me a BIG problem. Almost bigger than not having a nice shower and bathroom.

Almost.

I'm kinda thinking about it. You can get a 24ft sailboat for 2k, and moorage (in Seattle) for $300 per month. Even with repairs and stuff, that ends up being cheap.

I find the idea very appealing. I love the water; I've always believed that I am a marine mammal trapped in a land mammal's body (all of those kids calling me a whale growing up might have something to do with this). Get rid of all my crap, and be rocked to sleep at night. Take my whole house on vacations to the San Juans. Sounds a'ight.

There would be a lot to learn. How to sail, how to maintain the thing. And I know that cooking and bathing and stuff would be a pain in the ass. iDunno, ideally I'd like to try it out first. I wonder if I could boatsit.

Anybody ever done this? Thoughts?

i'd like to have a houseboat. nod the ocean/sea though... that would be another story entirely. even in this day and age, pirates (i know it sounds weird) are a very real problem. hijacking of boats on the open water is becoming more and more widespread.

i read an article at the dentist's ofice yesterday about a guy who customized his boat to be 'pirate proof' (bulletproof glass, sliding steel doors, satellite alert system, guns, etc.) for his long-planned trip down the baja peninsula. he ended up dead. mysteriously.

the article addressed the fact that piracy of small pleasure craft is very, very common off the coast of mexico. everyone knows about it, yet officially no one knows about it. confused

I knew this guy named Duncan Macleod who lived on a houseboat. He was a bit of an eccentric. Ran around talking about "There can be only one".
