Ok, I'm a newbie to the whole ipod thing(I know....) and I'm trying to convert my pre existing video files from windows media to itunes to sync to the ipod. Also some home made dvd copies of movies(no not THAT kinda movie)

Anybody know of a good converter programme, that doesn't cost a packet(and free would be even better ) that changes files to mp4(in an ipod styley!!) and is reliable, relatively easy to get hold of and to use(nope I'm not asking much huh?)
Any and all info is greatly received, as is thorntons licorice toffee but thats a whole other thread.
