loved the book.
William Peter Blatty directed The Exorcist 3 and wasnt even wanting it linked to The Exorcist movies. He wanted to call the film Legion but studio and producer pressure made him change it.
Its a shame because if it wasnt linked to The Exorcist it could have done so much better...It also contains one of the best ever "fright" moments in cinematic history biggrin

Still one of my favourite films. I went to see this at the cinema but was ultimately disappointed as the audience just laughed their way through it.
Except for the bit where she violates herself with the crucifix. That shut the fuckers up. biggrin
I've now got the DVD with the added scenes. That spider walk down the stairs... shake

lol I was 12, scared me too - but I was way into the horror magazines and stuff already, like Fangoria. Though I remember one of the nights when I was reading William Peter Blatty's novel in bed, I could have sworn my bed was shaking!!! The power of suggestion compelled me I suppose, but I could have sworn my bed was really shaking, lol. It was probably ME that was shaking, lol. Can't believe that was 35 years ago! eek

Oh lord. You're my long lost twin. I read it around 5th or 6th grade. My teacher was like "Um...I really don't think you should be reading that...."

I also collected MONSTER and FANGORIA magazines.

It's funny because I hadn't even seen the movie and the commercials would terrify me. I mean, I would have nightmares from the commercials alone. TUBULAR BELLS was horrifying to me.

I eventually saw it and thought it was brilliant. I still consider it to be the perfect movie. Script, lighting, acting, etc.

I loved Starlog, Fangoria, Monsters, Fantastic Films, all until about 1984. After that and the age of video, horror and scifi movies became so mass produced and straight to video that the mags content became not so special to me.

My parents wouldn't let us watch the TV version either. So my older sisters and I (I was about 7 at the time) take our old small black and white tv and watched it with all the lights out in one of their rooms so my parents wouldn't catch us. Needless to say this thing scarred the CRAP out of me. It was the whole bed shaking/levitating that literally had me crying...mind you I was 7.

Anyway, the movie is over and I am sleeping in my bed...next thing I know my bed is shaking up and down just like the movie...I run screaming crying from my room. Turns out my sisters were under my bed kicking my boxspring with their feet. mad

Weird, we were all reading the same mags. I also read Omni & Heavy Metal, plus some Punk fanzines. Does anybody remember the Cinemafantastique issue dedicated to The Exorcist? I still remember the makeup artist featured in the mag, Dick Smith? He was a genius before his time. I think Max Von Sydow was in his thirties at the time and he made him look like he was in 70s! I think he did the same thing for Bowie in the Hunger.

Dick Smith was the pioneer for modern monster horror effects! I have all those Cinefantastiques (even the Star Wars one)

I may still have some of those magazines in my basement somewhere. I remember one of the magazines had an article on the guy that played the detective. I guess he died soon after the movie was finished. In the article there's a picture of him (black and white I believe) at the bottom of the famous Exorcist stairs.

I had to laugh right now. I always thought Max von Sydow was that old. I remember watching Star Wars and thinking,"Wow, he looks so much younger. He must have had work done."

I saw the 2000 re-release on the big screen. My favorite part was when Ellen Burstyn is talking 2 the Doctor and he lights up a cigarette in the office. The audience howled with laughter. It was most xcellent.

I've never seen the Exorcist on the big screen but the North Park theatre is doing old horror movies all month and i'm going!!!

a bunch of queens and a great movie who can ask for anything more?

At first when I read that I thought they were remaking it (Glad they are not because I don't care for any of the remakes, the omen, the fog, Halloween and so on.). The dvd has the spider walk down the stairs scene, don't know if they will show that. Enjoy and let's us no how you liked it.

Yeah I guess when I saw it in the theaters I was expecting to see Exorcist 3 but in reality it was not an Exorcist movie but based on a book. I'm sure the book is good but Hollywood wanted to fool people by making it seem like an Exorcist movie. They threw in an exoriscm at the end just to justify the title. I also felt ripped off by Halloween 3: Season of the witch. It had nothing to do with Michael Myers (though they show a commercial of Halloween in the bar scene.....whoopi!!!!!). Though I liked the movie, I hate the fact Hollywood does stupid shit like that. The movie should have been called "Season of the Witch". I think I still would have seen it and would have not felt betrayed. Oh well.

And Father Shanley at my school actually performed exorcisms omg he was called in as expert on A Current Affair here when that person died during an exorcism.

The first film, The Exorcist was a novel as well, also by Blatty, who produced and wrote the screenplay for the first film.

The most horrifying suspenseful film of the genre. Supposedly based on a true story where the possessed was a boy and a lot of murders took place in that D.C neighborhood. The unedited film version is quite scary. At the time the film was distributed, back in the 70s, many Americans could not handle it and some fainted in aisles or ran out of the theater screaming. Supposedly, requests for Exorcisms were rampant. cool

purplesweat

I'm terrible with horror movies, they're like a phobia to me.

One night my friend's said we were having a Johnny Depp DVD night which sounded great!

I get there and they're like "WE GOT THE EXORCIST!" I'm like NOOOOO.

So we all sat on the bed watching and I got up to the part where the doctors are checking her out and a face flashes on the screen. Then I was like OK that's it and I just stared at the ceiling for the rest of the movie lol

Just listening to it scared me. shake

This was the scene where in the theater I saw this in, the guy right in front of us (who came by himself and was eating popcorn off the floor), grabbed the seat in front of him and leaned forward screaming like a little girl. FINNIEST thing I've ever seen in a movie theater (not including the movies I've seen there)! lol
