Anx, you answered your own question. It's ART, not design. In the example you posted, Warhol removed the function of the box/brillo pads, thereby rendering it art. There weren't any Brillo pads in the box to use, it wasn't the design of the typeface that he was most concerned with; it was the idea of taking something from popular culture and making it into art (and making fun of the art establishment at the same time). He took away the function of the box and made it into art. biggrin

Sorry, I have had this conversation ad naseum with my grad school friends as well as on here at least three times. Art is not design and design is not art. (Possible exception: architecture.)

but the box sculpture suggests the possibilty that, in the "wrong" hands, the box could be used for storage, and it could also be used to advertise brillo pads. if i had the money, i could buy a warhol brillo box, cut it open, fill it with brillo pads, discretely and anonymously drop it off at a smalltown mom & pop grocery store and they'd treat it just like any other shipment of brillo pads. does that mean that i have the ability to define what is art and what is design if i have the money to do so?

Haute Couture was invented by the Chambre Syndicale de Paris. It is to be used only by designers who are members there.

Couture is just a finely produced garment using high end, hand crafted techniques on the garment (hand embroideries and hand stitching). Usually tailored to perfection. These garments are never massed produced. They are one of a kind pieces.

Any designer who produces one of a kind pieces can call themselves a couture designer. Not every designer can call themselves a Haute Couture designer.

Juicy couture is misuing the word couture on their label,

All the couture and haute couture designs can be wearable or not. Fashion is a form of Art. Design can be a verb or noun as a verb it is the process to create art. As a noun it is a finshed product of artwork.

Avant garde refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, They can be functional or not.

Mass produced garments are called Ready-to-wear and cannot be called haute couture or couture because they use simple finishes made by machines.

It's not art, it's design.

Design is not art.

Art is functionless.

Design has function.

Haute couture can be worn*, hence it is functional, hence it is not art.

*Not the same as wanting to wear it, that it's practical, etc. But you could wear it.

Art is not stupid. hmph! Art makes life bearable. sigh
