are people really supposed to buy this fashion from Pierre Cardin's Winter '09 collection?

it's just sculpture. it's art. it's silly and over the top, but big deal. these things should be allowed to exist in the world. why not? if i had to choose between these dr. seuss looking dresses or a steven segal movie, i know which i'd want.

thank you. For 3 decades now I've been searching for the meaning of it. You clarified it for me in a few sentences. Thank you.

It's art.

And no, almost no one is expected to go out and buy it.

Although I bet I could rock that red purse. giggle

these are the things that inspire ready to wear collections, down the line, one day these shapes will be apparent in what we are wearing.

why not?

look at all the crazy shit you see in a museum. what's the difference between it hanging from a wall and if it's hanging from a model?

i think haute couture is silly but i also think it's fun to look at. when you make peace with the fact that it has no practical application other than to be wearable art, then it makes a little more sense.

nod Some things will trickle down, absolutely. Way, way less extreme versions or pieces or even just colors where you can see what it was inspired by.

And there ARE a few people in the world who buy it, like probably the sultan of brunei who buys it for women in his harem or whatever.

But overall, it's mainly "just" art. .

You have no idea how many times I've been told to read about "this prolific artist" in class only to end up being pissed off that this asshole is making money on shit that shouldn't even be considered art.

shrug such is life.

the so-called 'fashion industry' is comprised of those same folks who brought us the emperor's new clothes.

based on some of the clothing out there i'd say current designers are having a contest among themselves to see who can pull off the most outrageous joke on the buying public.

that will be one good thing about the recession. it will kill off stupid deisgn houses and ideas in favor of actual clothing that people will buy.

just my 2c biggrin

i'm sure if we got dolled up in what we in 2008 consider to be chic, elegant, stylish clothes and went into a time machine to 100 years ago, the clotheshorses of 1908 would think we were dressed like a bunch of freaks and make fun of our ridiculous haute couture outfits. smile

It's not art, it's design.

Design is not art.

Art is functionless.

Design has function.

Haute couture can be worn*, hence it is functional, hence it is not art.

*Not the same as wanting to wear it, that it's practical, etc. But you could wear it.

Art is not stupid. hmph! Art makes life bearable. sigh
