Shall I get the tea and scones ready? [Edited 9/24/08 10:51am] You have no idea how much my mouth is watering now. That looks positively heavenly. Clotted cream is not easy to come by here. I want to go back to the UK. |

You're in the majority in your country. Only 27% of Americans hold passports. And that sign of an insular mindset scares the shit out of us Europeans. It's actually mostly a matter of geography and affordability. I had to save up for 2 years to go on my first trip to Europe when I was 25 (8 years ago) and that was by giving up a lot of things many americans don't go without. With as weak as the dollar is now, I can no longer afford international travel, where as just 2 years ago I was traveling abroad once or twice a year. If we could easily take a train to another country in a matter of hours or even one day, many of us would do it without hesitation. |

Where I live (SF Bay Area) it is probably around an 10 hour plus drive to the nearest border (Mexico), in Europe, how many countries could you drive to/through in that time frame? It is very expensive to travel for many of us, especially over seas. In my case I have to pay for 5 full price round trip tickets. That's at least $3000 right there and that is not even counting hotels, meals, transportation while there, etc..... "Always blessings, never losses......"

The dollar is weak now for sure, but this country was quite poor until recently and yet we still travelled. People here just budget for it. IMHO a large part of the difference is cultural - travelling abroad is part of our lives for most of us. I've been in the US about 8 or 9 times - worked there for a couple of months too - and the impression you get is there's almost a fear of the outside world. Speaking of which, I forgot to add Cuba to my list. Damn communists and their... music! | |
