My dad gave me my first car, an old VW Golf diesel.....I was very happy with it and drove it a good 7 years. All the cars I had eversince were company cars. The one I had before I bought myself from the company when I quit that job. The car I'm driving right now, I don't pay anything for.....not even speeding tickets!
My apartment was bought from a loan from my father. He says it's better to get the money from him and pay him back, instead from a bank. I think I'm fotunate.

Did they make you pay board/rent while at home and if so from what age and how much... Would you do the same for your children? (Is it charater building and more satisfying for kids to pay their own way...or should parents help out as much as they can to see their kids get ahead in life) [Edited 9/23/08 20:28pm] Nope, my parents didn't buy my anything at all (don't have my driving liscense so that wasn't an issue since I left the house at the age of 16) My mum helpd me out a couple of times when I was an adult and married ('m talking abt small amounts like 75 euros) My dad spent the savings they did for me when he divorced my mum but it learned me how to take care of my own in a way. Now as for my son...we bought him an old Suzuki last february and we pay for his health insurance and education. I want him to have a good start Mind you, he does work his ass off besides his study but is now at a point that we have to watch him carefully because I get the feeling he think life is a big celebration and, in my mind, is using my home as a hotel Ughh! But he's a good kid,he just needs some guidance (sp?)

I moved out when I was 18....so no..... I will do everything possible to help my kids get going...nobody in my family was in any kind of position to help...I am far better off and don't want my kids to go REALLY without like I did....

I grew up knowing that you got nothing in life unless you earned it. So I paid for EVERYThing I ever had. When I got married my wife's family contributed heavily to our wedding and our first home - it didn't really feel right but that is the custom in Italy and who was I to refuse. Score!! Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

My mother gave me my first car. My father in law bought our first tv. We've paid for everything else ourselves. I'm firmly planted in denial

I saved and bought everything myself.. and I wouldnt give my (future) kids a car or house.. I believe they have to work to gain things in life, and so they will appreciate them more. I will love you forever and you will never be forgotten - L.A.F.

My mother sold me her old car. And as for my house, well, that debts all mine, baby. I've always paid for my own gas and insurance as well.
I had to buy my own clothes from the time I was 14 only because I had a paying job as a babysitter. Mom did buy me clothes for Christmas & birthdays but back to school shopping for clothes ended as soon as I could buy them myself. Shake it til ya make it

My parents bought my first car, but that was because my dad was in the car business and he didn't want me driving (and possibly damaging) his demo - or my mom's car. They paid for the insurance and I got a certain number of fill-ups per month (because I drove us all to school and to various extracurriculars). Beyond that, I had to pay for gas.
The car wasn't only mine - my younger sisters drove it as they got their licenses. It stayed at home when I went to college. After college, I bought my own car and, eventually, my condo. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
