DID YOUR parents buy you ur first car, house etc .... (Inspired by ur first car thread)
Did they make you pay board/rent while at home and if so from what age and how much... Would you do the same for your children? (Is it charater building and more satisfying for kids to pay their own way...or should parents help out as much as they can to see their kids get ahead in life) [Edited 9/23/08 20:28pm]

My grandfatheer gave me my 1st 2nd and 4th cars ( I bought my 3rd and others )
My Dad gave us our property as a wedding gift I paid for the house we built with my inheritence I paid zero rent while living at home and my family paid for college Yes I tried/am trying to the same for my children They have their intire adult life to work and be adults - mind you all our kids have worked on and off since the age 16 and have saved $ and bought things they have wannted on their own.

Yeah, they bought me my first car. They never made me pay for room and board or anything like that. They covered the things that I needed. Now, as for everything else, such as clothing, shoes, entertainment, etc... I paid for that stuff starting at the age of 14.

i never got a car. i never had to pay rent. i wasn't even allowed to buy my own groceries, the idea of it pissed my mom off.
i DID however have to contribute to the housework regularly as long as i was under my mom's roof. that was made perfectly clear at all times. as long as she was putting a roof over my head and feeding me, she made sure i understood that her hands were never to touch a bottle of dishsoap. as for what i would do with my own kids, i'd probably be somewhat similar to my mom. it would depend on how my kids respected living under my roof. i wasn't a perfect kid, but i did all the chores i was asked to do and i did my best to follow the rules (or at least break them as respectfully as possible, heh). after college i only went back to live at home for a few months, and then i lived on my own ever since. i never really wanted to depend on my mom's house as a long term option after i graduated college. it was second only to being homeless in my mind. i wouldn't want my kids to feel THAT dire about the idea of living at home, but i would also want them to go out in the world and stake their little corner of indepdendence whenever they feel ready. i think i'd probably deal pretty harshly with a slacker kid who had no intention of moving out or lifting a finger to pitch in. i wouldn't kick them out, but i'd make sure life at daddy's wasn't pleasant for them. i have my ways.

Ocean...
My dad totally bought my first car right before I graduated from H.S. But when I was married, we totally bought our first house ourselves. I don't have children. Ps~ I couldn't get out of the household fast enough... no money could make me stay. (back then) Only now... like 20 years later... I asked... "What if I move back home and take care of you two, get a local teaching job at our one and only school..." They would totally love that... but, they know moving back home is not for me. I really have it good in my job now, even though I do not like this city. I do love Arizona , just not living around so many people, confined. [Edited 9/23/08 20:42pm]

I inspired someone.... :verkempt:
My mother gave me my first car. My father in law bought our first tv. We've paid for everything else ourselves. I'm firmly planted in denial

I bought my first car and am buying my first home myself.
I didn't live with my mother long enough to pay rent. I got out a 15 years old. I will not buy my kids firsts either. I don't charge my oldest rent because he is not working but I rather he get out and get his own space than charge him rent. I do not believe in giving my children anything. I think they should work for those things important to them because, when they get out there in the real world, nothing will be given to them.

no, and not only did my mother not buy me my first car, I paid for it in cash, and had to borrow 700 dollars from my sister to cover the remaining.
In addition, my mother had about 50 grand in her savings account at the time Then she had the nerve to get pissy with me when I wrecked my own car, which I paid for, and had it's insurance in my name---in other words, zero liability to her stupid ass.

it depends on the culture of ur parents or parent i think : my parents r egyptian, my mom left when i was a kid but my father asks for nothing and got me my first car among other material possessions, but i don't pay rent or anything.
i offer to pay for things and he says that he is my father, how sweet i feel that these posessions are ways of saying i care about you, do as i say cause i got you this and that, but thats a different matter.

Parents did buy my first car and I started paying rent at about age 17.
Never have owned my own home, my parents never had the money to help with purchasing one. If I had the money I would defenitely help my daughter out Rhythm floods my heart♥The melody it feeds my soul

No, I bought my first car on my own when I was 17. My parents totally are the type to buy their kids everything (I have 3 bothers) but I always wanted to do it all on my own - so I did.
My parents took/take very good care of me and I'm sure some people would think I am spoiled but I paid board when I stayed with them when my son was first born and I always pay my own way. They are just always there wanting to help me out when I really need a hand. I'll probably be the same way with my son.
