Well, he's appealing to an underrepresented crowd - The Christian Black..

Big co-sign on this MuthaFunka, that's the first thing I think when Tyler's name comes up because that's the crowd who really loves his work most from what I've seen.

thumbs up!

Tyler Perry Launches 34th Street Films
posted on Sep 24, 2008

Tyler Perry has formed 34th Street Films, the L.A.-based a production arm of his Atlanta-based Tyler Perry Studios that will focus on projects written and directed by outside talent.

Matt Moore, former exec VP of production at Jinks/Cohen, will head the division; Poppy Hanks and Amber Rasberry join him. The trio will work from a Los Angeles office and report to Perry's HQ in Atlanta.
In July, Perry signed a three-year, first-look pact with Lionsgate Films, the studio that has released every Perry film. The deal requires writer-director-producer-actor Perry to deliver at least three films over the life of the contract. Lionsgate will retain a first-look position with 34th Street films as well.

Certainly, no one can hate on the brotha for makin' it happen as a movie-mogul-in-the-making though.

Gotta agree. The more black folks that have their own the better.

I was coming back to edit. Anyway, Spike Lee's movie seems to be getting some rave reviews, it might be early yet, but I'm excited to see it.

I was just looking at his stage plays for the first time. I was wondering why his topics are all the same, the characters are always getting picked for the same kind of roles, same topics like this topic said, but he is funny as hell!. I feel like he exploits. I am not getting the sit com much either. It is like madea goes to jail. But he is funny as hell.

child I don't know. But everytime I say something negative about his crap films, I get accused of self-hate. what's up with that?

Because apparently Black people are supposed to ignore quality & just be happy that somebody is doing something neutral hammer People get too wrapped up, it's a GOOD thing to hold someone accountable for the quality of their work - I don't wanna see shitty films period, Black or White. I find his appeal baffling at times but I know we're starved for images/entertainment that isn't completely degrading - he fits the bill shrug

After this, his "appeal" may definitely wane:

Ousted writers to crash Tyler Perry’s party

By SHANE BLATT

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Friday, October 03, 2008

Four ousted writers of Tyler Perry’s production company along with a writer’s union are threatening to throw cold water on Saturday’s star-studded opening of Tyler Perry Studios in southwest Atlanta.

Kellie Griffin, Christopher Moore, Teri Brown-Jackson and Lamont Ferrell were fired Tuesday in retaliation for their union activities, according to a news release issued Thursday by the Writers Guild of America, West.

But Matt Johnson, Perry’s attorney, said in a prepared statement that the four writers “were terminated because of the quality of their work.” Three other writers were asked to stay, and two of them did, he said.

The Guild said it will set up picket lines starting at 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday outside Perry’s new multimillion-dollar TV and film studio on Continental Parkway,

The picketing will coincide with a grand opening gala that is expected to draw a lineup of A-list stars, including Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, Whitney Houston, Sidney Poitier, Mary J. Blige and Usher.

The Guild also said that on Thursday, it filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging the retaliatory firing of the four writers, who the union said collectively wrote more than 100 episodes of Perry’s “House of Payne.”

Jeff Hermanson, assistant executive director of the Guild, said in a telephone interview Thursday night that the writers had been negotiating with the company since this spring. When talks broke down, he said, “The writers were told they should be careful about pushing the deal and could be replaced.”

The writers were fired Tuesday, Hermanson said.

Johnson said they were terminated on Monday.

In the Guild’s news release, Moore said, “It’s very disheartening considering that this is a studio run by African-Americans. What Tyler Perry is essentially saying to us is that ‘you’re black and there is not a lot of opportunities for you so you’ll take what I give you, whether it’s fair or not.’”

Johnson responded, “It is unfortunate that the WGA has stooped to injecting race into a contract negotiation. Not only have they misrepresented the facts, they have done a disservice to their members.”

The lawyer said negotiations began five months ago with the union representing the seven writers for Perry’s show, “Meet the Browns.”

“We continue to work toward a resolution of their contract, and after months of negotiations we have reached agreement with the Guild on every major issue but one, including benefits, minimum weekly salary rates, script fees, minimum script commitments, guaranteed employment periods, cable residuals … video residuals, pay TV residuals, and foreign residuals,” Johnson said. “The one point which has not yet been agreed upon concerns free TV residuals.

“Instead of continuing to negotiate the contract of their members in good faith, the WGA’s Hollywood-based leadership decided to go to the media with a racially inflammatory press release attacking a man who employs over 300 Atlantans, the majority of whom are African-American,” the attorney said.

For the lonest time black women with families and issues dont have a voice in the main industry and Tyler did that.

I think madea was the best character I have ever seen in 2000 and hope to see more of her southern gun toting, take no mess, with a side of wisdom- self soon.

I love his plays because the singing is always outstanding, the messages in them resonate with his audiences and the ones with Madea are hilarious. His movies won't make Scorsese lose any sleep but I've seen much worse.
