Well, True Blood is here... I'm halfway through the 1st episode.
Would it be cliched to say it sucks? I'm trying to find something interesting to invest in, but nothing yet. Anyone else watch it? http://www.hbo.com/truebl...ack_para1= feat_main_image Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders and government officials around the world have chosen their sides, but in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out. Local waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), however, knows how it feels to be an outcast. "Cursed" with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, she's also open-minded about the integration of vampires — particularly when it comes to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road. But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill's arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test. A sexy, scary new drama from 'Six Feet Under' creator Alan Ball, 'True Blood' delves into the meticulously-crafted world of novelist Charlaine Harris. Described by the Emmy®-winning Ball as "popcorn for smart people" and featuring a colorful cast of local misfits, 'True Blood' promises an intense ride. It's an interesting concept, but I'm starting to get tired of such dark material.
Also, if the video clips throughout the viral campaign are any indication, the acting we can anticipate is pretty thin. I'm not feeling good about that. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

The vampire having sex with that chick was fucked up and I loved the opener.
I don't know, I'm a fan of Anne Rice and her vampires. They didn't have sex though so I'm not sure how I feel about this show. A couple more episodes will flush out some of these odd moments...

Moderator | I was disappointed but I'll watch a couple more times before I pass complete judgement. In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

Disappointing. I was intrigued to see what Alan Ball would come up with, and I like Anna Pacquin, so I tuned in. But it's really a mess. It can't make up its mind if it wants to be camp, darkly funny, serious, scary, or social commentary. I'll give it a few more episodes, but it really needs to get a clear identity formed.

They hit you over the head with that one didn't they. There's a reason why subtle works better than obvious. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

They hit you over the head with that one didn't they. There's a reason why subtle works better than obvious. Exactly my thought. In Six Feet Under (I thought) Ball handled gay relationships so well and honestly that I expected more than a giant hammer emerging from my TV screaming "THE VAMPIRES ARE GAY ALLEGORY". Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

It's interesting you drew that parallel. I absolutely take the vampires to be an allegorical ethnic minority. Sure, LGBTs freak out heteros because they challenge a cultural status quo, but they pose no immediate personal threat. Certain groups like blacks, Latinos and Arabs, for example, more routinely terrify middle America, because not only do their mystique and supposed sensibilities challenge the status quo, but Western history is scarred by just enough friction with these groups that there is ever a subtle, eerie threat of insurgent (or retaliatory, depending on how you look at it) violence. [Edited 9/8/08 22:02pm] I thought they painted with such broad strokes that either works for me, but knowing Ball's tendencies, went with the gay version. I also likes that out of maybe 10 main characters introduced, 3 are African American and at least 1 is gay. It makes it harder to pin down excatly which so you can make your own decision. This is about the only thing I have even thought twice about from this show, and it is so ham fisted at that. Really dull pilot. Well, episode 2 may have been worse than the first.
I really want to like the show, but right now, all that is keeping me watching is Anna Paquin's wardrobe and the possibility of seeing that hot waitress naked. I saw the first episode one night last week.....wasn't planning on it though. I kinda liked it. I guess I didn't have any expectations going into it. I figured it would be just another HBO that I forget about and miss. Someone mentioned campy....yeah it seems more campy than anything. Maybe that's why many aren't impressed. I could tolerate campy though. I swear Tara is beyond country. Of the time spent in the South, I have never heard anyone speak with an accent that thick. lol. I liked the intro of episode 1 too.....I like how the one you'd least expect ended up being the vampire. Haven't seen episode 2 yet. Is it just me or does Bill look a little like Tom Brady? looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

Thank God for Entourage! Most reviewers got a 5 episode DVD and claim the show improves after the first two episodes. If I hadn't heard that I'd be done. I'm down for one or two more but I don't know if I could watch 12 episodes about someone named Sookie. I get pissed off every time someone calls her by name. Except I would substitute "Stephen Moyer" for "Anna Paquin" and "vampire" for "waitress." But otherwise just the same.
