XBox 360 or PS3 80G?

Which should I get?

I hear PS3 has free internet play which is starting to tickle my fancy. Can the new 80 G's play the old PS 1 & 2 games?

Sony has yanked the PS2 chip from the PS3 so they are not mostly compatible anymore. I think the only model that had the PS2 chip was the 60 gig release model. They may run software emulation now, but actual backwards compatibility is gone.

The 360 has the games and the online community. Yea, it's $50 a year but it works and is not dependent on individual servers for each game. If a developer decides to cut online servers, you're done. PS3 servers have a knack for going down as well. They also update their firmware about twice a month and the mandatory downloads are SLOW. Expect to log on to play and then waste an hour with an update.

In 2 years of PS3 ownership, the only game I have found other than exclusives that was better on PS3 was "Mirrors Edge" which ended up being a shitty game, but the controls were better on PS3.

What kind of games are you looking to play?

I also think you can have a 120 GB 360 for less than the 80 GB PS3, however the PS3 has wireless networking built in. The 360 is wired out of the box.

360 has better shooters and action games, more exclusives, and Sony has had their racer "Gran Tourismo" in development for the PS3 for years with only a demo out, which they charged for!

I think you would be better off with the 360 Elite especially with the new partnership with Netflix to deliver HD movies right to your Xbox.

The best use for a PS3 right now is as a Blu-Ray player.

The Elite is the black model. It has a 120 GB Hard Drive. The Arcade model has no HD at all. I think it is $399. The 360 is backwards compatible as well, there are limitations, but you can find a list of compatible games at www.xbox.com, that site will also break down the different models for you.
