I had no idea if they were English, I just knew they weren't German . Although there is the German term Wimpel that means a small flag (like the ones kids put on bycicles or the ones that are used for football merchandise)and wikipedia just told me that is also stands for the same as the English term wimple. But I never heard that meaning of the term before.
