It's hard to go with just one actor, same as musical artists.

Few top picks would be:

Al Pacino
Johnny Depp
Woody Allen
Monica Bellucci
Heath Ledger
Anthony Quinn
Clint Eastwood
Melina Mercouri
Aliki Vouyouklaki
Marlon Brando
Sidney Poitier
Sean Penn
Leonardo Dicaprio
Meryl Streep etc

hmm .. don't really have one.. but if you ask me.. 'what performances were the best?' then I'd say I liked Dustin Hoffman in 'Rain Man', Halle in 'Losing Isaiah', Denzel in 'Glory', the movie 'The Tuskegee Airmen', Michael Douglas in 'Wall Street'.. there's alot

For pure enjoyability, maybe Jack Nicholson. Despite a fairly narrow range of expression, I always find him to be completely believable. Yes he's always Jack, but he is Jack reacting realistically & honestly to different life situations. He's fearless, and even though he's often the cool one, he can do very tender & emotional stuff.

After that, probably Robert DeNiro. He has done some of my favorite roles, but I haven't liked many of his choices lately. Roles like the one in (was it called?) Stardust with Michelle Pfeiffer were a little over the top, but Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Godfather, Cape Fear, Mean Streets, and on are damn near perfect.

And lately I'm thinking that I haven't see a single performance of Meryl Streep that I haven't loved. She's not someone I seek out, but she is truly one of the best, and does everything from drama to comedy, musicals, and even dingo-eats-baby accents.
