Yes, I've picked up hitchhikers and I've hitchhiked. This was back in the 80s and I didn't have any transportation. BUT my great aunt Zoe also use to hitchhike about 300 miles when she was in her 70s. We use to offer to send her money for the bus and she'd refuse saying "I meet some of the most interesting people when I'm hitchhiking, that I wouldn't ever have met if I took the bus. Besides, ain't no one want to hurt an old woman. Do you know I can get where I'm going a lot faster than most people can when they are driving, because people feel sorry for old people on the road hitchhiking?" But then again, she was a very big advocate for a lot of causes, and I truly think she had to be an old hippie in the 60s, when most hippies were young. lol

years ago, a group of friends and I were driving to the beach in separate cars...my buddy and his passengers were a few minutes ahead of me and called to tell me that a really hot girl was hitchhiking at the interstate on-ramp...she was still there when I arrived so I offered her a ride...she was indeed hot as hell...we chatted about general bullshit and she said that she'd just like to ride as far as I was going....she had a small duffle bag which I noticed she was overly protective of...since I really had no idea who this girl was, I asked her, "What's in your bag, clothes or something?"...her reply..."None of your fucking business!"...that kinda struck me odd, so I asked again and got the same answer,"None of your fucking business!"...I pulled over and told her to get out...she argued and fussed but I left her on the side of the road..as soon as I pulled off, I noticed she had left her bag in the floorboard of my car...I kept going...

Not in a million years, would I pick-up a complete stranger. I did however offer a ride to a lady I am use to seeing in my nieghborhood who is always pushing a stroller, holding another kids hand, and carrying groceries. Lady was so stunned she dropped her groceries. eek

Yeah, I liked her too. She use to wear all these advocate buttons on her jackets, and always wore a rainbow too, though I never knew what that meant until I was much older. She never married, never had a desire to marry, but I never heard anything about her from other family members. She wore planned parenthood buttons, "only one race: human" buttons, "save the whales" buttons, etc and so forth. I always said she reminded me of the rainbow she always wore, she was just so colorful and full of life and love. biggrin

Never hitchhiked but if I am on a long drive somewhere on a fairly boring straight ahead highway (and they are probably heading the same), and there is room in my car, I would consider giving someone a lift. I did before.

I usually have no room in my car though.

about 12 years ago, when I was still living in Munich, I was on my way back from a weekend of sailing in Italy, I picked up 2 girls at the Italian/Austrian border for a ride to Munich.....it was fun, I ended up having a relationship with one of them.....how uncomplicated times were back then! sigh

My brother used to hack (or gypsy-cab, or whatever its called in your city when people pay strangers to pull over and give them a ride...)

I went with him once or twice, and it was a bit creepy, cause he picked up some pretty shifty looking people lol

I pick up hitchhikers, depends on what my intuition tells me. Never if I have a lot of cash on me.

I used to hitchhike when i was younger. Pretty stupid. Some guys are real assholes. neutral

Twice I have nod...both were female hitchhikers, the first time was during rush hour on a busy side street, the other time was when two women came up to me in a parking lot, asked me if I was going towards L.A. on the 101 and if so, if I could drop them off.

Oh yeah, but long ago. Lately, I've picked a woman up out of a ditch, but that's as close to a hitchhiker as I've come.

Sometimes though, on really cold days, if I see someone walking I will offer them a ride. Does that count?

I have picked up a hitchhiker once, and only once!

I'm sure there must be plenty of normal ones around (one of my friends, in fact, used to hike all over Europe so I know they aren't all weirdos) but the one I picked up was a Frenchman who only talked about blood.

Thankfully my husband was in the car too but we both felt extremely nervous and ended up dropping him off on the outskirts of London because we really didn't want to take him any further into the city.
