Did I explain that well?

I understand but I still don't agree. I don't think it is in our nature to not care what others think. This is why the emotion embarrassment exists.

I'll tone down my example and say if you were in the street and fell and slipped right into a huge puddle - if spectators started to laugh, how would you handle that? Not many would be able to avoid getting flustered and red-faced. That in itself is caring what others think right there.

Sure, but that's an inadvertent situation, something not done intentionally, a total accident. That, I can see, yeah.

But Natasha's question was of a different realm, about "daring to be different" and "unafraid of reactions"; that implies our everyday habits, actions and voicing our opinions. Things we do intentionally. However, you're right; I don't think there is a person alive who hasn't gone through an embarrassing accident.

Yes but I was going more for the reactions that ensued - I think the nature of the question evolved through the responses.

Anyhow, I'm glad we agree to disagree. biggrin

At the end I didn't realize we disagreed. I actually agreed with you, we were just responding to two different contexts initially. Ya see. biggrin

If nothing else being controversial makes people think. Rather it's pro or con. Look at Prince, he never cared what people thought of him and look at how he's changing the industry of music. Controversy brings change. People who do not want change are the ones who should be fearful, because they're going to be left behind when the rest of the world passes them by and they'll be stuck in never never land.

Nah :I: embrace controversy and self-promotion...

Who in their right mind would stand up and walk around outside the Prince concert in London for 3 hours on all 3 days holding up a www.prince.org sign?

Ask, Katt, Unique, Ian, GoldiesParade, Starbuck, MsSerendipity among others!!!

"controversy", like most things, is relative.

To answer the question for myself: generally, no..
even though it's something that I don't aspire to be.

Many people intentionally try to be "controversial" & if that is obvious, that tends to lessen the desired impact of the controversial act. The most effective controversy is..
spontaneous (?)

Thats like saying "r u a leader or a follower?"in a sense. i used to care alot what people thought of me, till i realized ppl really have their own problems and most couldnt care less about yours (what one does or thinks or says). ppl really dont notice all that much one way or another. our lives are too busy. plus, u do have to exercise the right to be yourself, and that means not being afraid to stray from the "norm". i look at it this way; if ppl dont like what i do or say, then maybe they arent worth my time because u should like/respect a person for who and what they stand 4, and if u cant handle that, u shouldnt be hanging with him/her. it's VERY feasible to like/admire a person even if one doesnt agree with them all the time. live & let live. BTW, natasha, this was a good topic for a change.
