Interestingly, at least one reviewer as compared 8 Mile to Purple Rain. Supposedly, it ends with a big concert, same as Purple Rain.

Purple Rain is very much like Cabaret. So now, Prince and Eminem are tied to Liza. The world makes sense again.

No. The commercials I saw always featured plenty of him. How else would they sell the movie? This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

No. The commercials I saw always featured plenty of him. How else would they sell the movie? yeah, i thought that too..but the marketing team made it a point to exclude his face from the commercials...granted, the commercials could have changed per market appeal (urban versus suburban..yada yada)...they also pointed out that they persuaded M&M *not* to do too many interviews for the movie...it was an interesting study on the marketing of the film...wish I remembered which news show it ran on...possibly fox news.

there is a song by eminem on the sampler disc that comes with the soundtrack called 'stimulate'...it contains the linn drum...i don't know if it's a sample or just the drum machine (there isn't really any info about the tracks on the sampler disc)..but it's actually better than any of the songs on the actual soundtrack in my opinion...checkitout...

Damn, the only similarities between Cabaret and Purple Rain are that they both have musical numbers. One was about a vaudevillian-type stage show whose antics paralelled the rise of the Nazi party in the early-mid 30s, while the other is about a young musician realizing the FOILS he has with his father's character, and attempting to steer clear of them so he doesn't suffer the same fate. Interestingly though, I sure have heard a TON of comparisons to Purple Rain. The interesting thing is, they've all been positive comments about Purple Rain. What's more, I was watching a bio of Roger Ebert, and he teaches a movie class, and he was deciding what musical to play for them. He was having trouble deciding between his 3 favorites: Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Beatles "Hard Day's Night", or Prince's "Purple Rain". "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring faith. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal" - Carl Sagan

I saw 8 Mile on Saturday, and yes there are a ton of similarities.
• Struggling rock (rap) star • Dysfunctional home • Meets a girl • Relationship with girl is rocky • 2 opposing musical acts • Girl linked to other musical act • Musical battle, where the star is victorious OK, I tried not to give anything away - these are just the basics, and look at how similar Purple Rain/8 Mile are! nobody has mentioned the Kim Basinger connection . . . hmmm

The numbers are "real" within the plot, instead of being fantasy moments. Both begin with someone on stage explaining what the entertainment will be about while scenes show what's happening outside the venue (in PR, Appolonia arriving, while in Cabaret, it's Michael York coming to Berlin). People don't just start singing for no reason -- they have a job at a small venue, and that's where we see them perform numbers that are integral to the plot, that comment on it. The similarities don't go much farther, but are significant enough, especially since they are both beautifully done. Watch both movies again and you will see what I mean.

I was listening to Howard Stern and they had a short discussion on it. Comparing it to PR. Robin said it was a good movie the way PR was good. Howard said that Prince was a horrible actor but he loves the music.
I seen 8 Mile and it was great. It was similar to PR and i loved how it was set in 1995 just before Hip Hop started going downhill. It had alot of great music and Eminem is a pretty good actor. Peace and Love!

Anyone notice...that Emenim is an idiot? Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

The Underground Detroit hip hop scene in 8 mile is parallel to the underground music scene portrayed in PR. Em's problems with his mother, a definate parallell to Prince's parental problems in PR. And most importantly, the rivalry in 8 mile vs. the rivalry in PR. So yeah there are a lot of similarities. The only difference being that Em's acting was pretty good (he's no Larry Olivier, but he got the job done) Whereas Prince's acting was much more forced and plastic. dammit [This message was edited Tue Nov 12 7:12:03 PST 2002 by LadyCabDriver] ***************************************************

Don't you all think this would be the typical storyline for any musician/performer?

yes...but IMO, PR and 8 Miles presented this storyline in a more unique way than most RnR films. ***************************************************

I quit listening to hip hop after 92. As influential as The Chronic was, it seemed (to me at least) to be a downward spiral from there. There's a point where Dre shifted from "I dont smoke weed or cess cuz its known to give a brother brain damage...express yourself!" to The Chronic. 93, 94, 95...other than an outstanding Tribe Called Quest album and the Above The Rim soundtrack, stuff like Domino and Compton's Most Wanted are best forgotten lol.

I don't care how stellar the movie is, how great the soundtrack is, or how fantastic of reviews it gets. I can't shake the fact that eminem is an asshole. I'm just basing this on interviews I've seen of him. The marketing, the production, etc are flashy, and yes he can rap. But at the core of it isn't someone admirable. More like detestable...

You know, folks said this same thing about Prince 20 years ago. I believe Em is going through his misunderstood period just as Prince did. ***************************************************
