Anyone else DREAD when your parents come over? Since my father arrived about two hours ago, he has managed to make EVERYONE in the house try and feel inferior. He has insulted everyone and I am THIS CLOSE to telling him it's time for him to go home.

That sucks. I hope his stay gets better for you.
My dad feels the need to insult my house every time he comes over, usually by telling me that I need to clean. One time I had my house the cleanest it has ever been. When he came in, he didn't make one complaint. Then I had to show him something that needed fixed in the laundry room. The room is separate and I have to be honest, I leave dirty clothes on the floor because I'm the only one who goes in there. He said "Jeez, don't you ever do your fucking laundry?" You see, I know my dad doesn't feel very good about himself so it makes him feel better to tear other people down. I try not to let it get to me but when I spend 2 days cleaning my house just for him to criticize the smallest thing, it ticks me off. At least he isn't insulting me on how fat I am anymore. Shake it til ya make it

Well I don't really dread it anymore, since my folks live 13 hrs away and don't travel anymore. But back in the day, I would spend a week cleaning my house, right down to the base boards of the house, so my Mother couldn't find anything wrong. I would coach the kids on what they could say and what they shouldn't. And we as a family would walk on egg shells for a week.
I really hate that feeling, now that I must go visit them to see them, I just take everything with a grain of salt. My mom is 72 yrs old, and I figure she will never change. Proud Memaw to Seyhan Olivia Christine ,Zoey Cirilo Jaylee & Ellie Abigail Lillian

When he's feeling hurt or pissed off, he takes it out on everyone. I try to just give him a hug and a kiss and tell him to have a Coke and a smile and you know the rest. He's a good guy, really he is. Under the layers of asshole. It's all part of his charm! The Normal Whores Club

Did you guys make it to ATL? SOrry I missed y'all if I did. Broken refridgerator and a stinky kitchen thwarted the rest of the weekend's plans for me. If you didn't come, then disregard the last statement as just rambling. Sorry for jacking. My folks are rediculous. My mom just doesn't know when to quit. With anything. Just keeps on and gets in your face. So special, she doesn't understand the word boundaries.

"Where is CHristopher? Is he behind that computer again? What's he doing there? Can't he show an old man proper respect?"

In other words, did you just sneak out of the room to complain about your dad online?

I love my mother and we get along better than a lot of people my age do with their parents, but she's still not over the idea that she has to do everything for me and give me careful instructions on how to do everything in my own home, including how long to walk my dog and what groceries to buy.
She was here just a few weeks ago. I hate wasting food, but what the fuck am I supposed to do with 3 mega-packs of bologna? I wouldn't eat it, and I don't feel great about feeding that mystery meat to my dog either. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Thanks to the powerful economic forces at play, my wife, two kids and I LIVE with my parents!
If they come over it's just a flight of stairs and TADA!!! It's good that things have mellowed since my mom tried to have my wife deported... otherwise things might be "AWKWARD!"!! *grumbles, "I need to buy something foreclosed...* A working class Hero is something to be ~ Lennon

after over a decade of estrangement, if my dad called up and told me he was coming over for a visit, i'd call a documentary crew and an audience of friends, and i'd make sure everyone had a full tub of popcorn.

Ex-Moderator | My father has never been inside wherever I've lived since I moved out at age 18.
My mother has never seen this apartment. They simply don't come over. |
