You're Family Is Too Religious

I was talking to my crush last night about my trip home. I started talking about my family and our faith everyone follows from one degree or another. I was born and raised Roman Catholic, I'm confirmed and everything but I stopped going to mass when I moved to San Diego 9 years ago. Anyway my family runs from nuns to lay people who go to mass everyday, including my crazy cousin running for governor of Missouri, to once a week people, to holiday Catholics to people who haven't been to mass since my grandfather died 11 years ago. But my crush told me that my family was too religious for him, and wouldn't want to meet most of them sad anyone else have this happen to them?

NO. Were you planning on introducing this person to your family?

I find your connection to the faith you were born into extremely endearing nod

my family is mostly a bunch of freakin heathens.

well, except for my dad's family. they're german baptists. they're a lot like the amish - they have the beards and the bonnets and the whole amish style of dressing, but they're allowed some modern conveniences as long as they are modest and practical (so yes to electricity, no to television/radio).

i guess there was once in college when i kinda took a lot of factors for granted and i took my first gay boyfriend to my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary/family reunion picnic.

i kinda forgot to tell him about their religion and he was a little amazed. but that's okay, because i kinda forgot to tell my family i was gay, so everyone got a little jolt that day. lol

I have never had anyone say that to me. I too was raised Catholic and still practice. I am sorry your crush said this to you. But be proud of your beliefs and hold on to what makes you feel close to your family. hug

I've dated a couple guys with strong religious beliefs, or views that differed strongly from mine. It can be tough; at least it was a big gap for me and the people I was with. It's too bad your crush said that, but maybe he thinks it's a red flag for himself or for his ability to take things further with you. If that's the case, it's good that he's putting it out there now and not hiding it. If someone couldn't accept my family, that would be a deal-breaker for me.

hug That's really sad. sad I'm sorry he said that to you. That's really amazing how your family is so involved and be proud of your faith. I was raised Catholic as well and a lot of my family is still strong in faith. I have not been confirmed and don't agree with some of the beliefs, but I would never knock someone for such faith. I'm part Native American and keep a lot of those beliefs (which are sometimes seen as "pagan") close to me. I'm a non-practicing Catholic. I find that I still pray to saints from time to time without thinking.

I'm sorry, Eric. hug

Maybe it would help to explain to your crush a little bit more about your family - how accepting they are of gay people, for example. It sounds like he may have had some bad experiences in the past with religion or the religious.

I had a boyfriend in HS break up with me because I (my family) was not religious enough. I had a dog named Satan when I was six years old and took pics in to show and tell. The teacher flipped when I told everyone that this was my dog Satan. I had no clue, he was just a beautiful German Shepherd that protected me.
Anyways..... this guy told me that he could not date someone that was not baptised and that was going to hell. Oh and the finally straw was me listening to Motley Crue. falloff

Now he has a new one on his arm that is Sinhalese. Though I cannot talk, I have a new one on my back, Sinhalese as well.

It is all good!

I've been raised as a catholic and ended up to have my personal point of view about my beliefs. When I was in college/Uni my family made me split up twice (including a long term relationship) because the boyfriends I had refused to convert. I respect religions but I suffered way too much because of bigotry.
Is there any place of refuge one can flee from this insanity
