The latest is it may hit land as a category 2 hurricane which means less wind pressure. It is at category 3 in the Gulf but it isn't gaining strength.
The Westbank (The other side of the river) may get it the worst along with the coastal areas. They see it moving west with warnings now including Texas. I hope it hits land and dissolves so no one has to deal with it. Major co-sign on this. for the folks in New Orleans. Let's hope this does not happen! They've been through enough already! Reading about this scares me, and I don't even live in New Orleans (thank goodness). [Edited 8/31/08 15:28pm] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Because Bush is a dumbass. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

StillGotIt said: This is terrible. I really hope that it doesn't hit there. I will say though, I dont understand why anyone would want to live there after learning the hard way how the levees are so defective. I dont understand.....
Agreed. I know that a lot of the people living in New Orleans are poor, perhaps they have no money to move somewhere else? I can't imagine Bush doing anything to help the poor people locate to a safer location, judging from what he's done in the past. [Edited 9/1/08 4:56am] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Tomorrow they're changing to counterflow traffic on the highway so that all of the major highways will be going north. I'm in Baton Rouge right now and we're not being evacuated. Stay safe! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

The allure of New Orleans is as a musician you can play 5 nights a week making $150-200 a day not counting casinos and weddings. Before the storm you could get a nice apartment and live nicely and make a profit.
My dumb a** moved back because in other cities excluding Nashville and New York it is strictly "weekend warrior" action and I enjoy playing music. But now the musicians are displaced and to do gigs it is like the Geneva Conference. And things aren't the same. But that's what I get for being Andy Hardy "trying to round up the gang and put on a show". For others it seems to be the "tradition" of the City and that "I was born here and I'm going to die here" mindset. My step-mom called my step-aunt who lives on the Westbank where the flooding is and begged her to evacuate to Denver and my step-aunt said what I descibed above "This is my home and I'm not leaving." Right now, the projected path of Hurricane Gustav is to hit landfall about 70 to 100 miles southwest of New Orleans as a Category 3 hurricane. While the wind speed is expected to be below that of Katrina, New Orleans could still be devastated due to the fact that the stormiest section of the hurricane, the northeast quadrant, is expected to go over the city. In addition to the 19 foot storm surge which could go directly up the Mississippi River, Gustav is expected to dump up to 20 inches of rain as it goes through land, as well as spawning numerous tornadoes.
On a more positive note, however, the residents are taking this hurricane very seriously, and most people who could did not wait for mayor Ray Nagin to tell them to get out of Dodge. The only ones who waited were the ones who had no transportation out of New Orleans, the poor, the elderly, and the people with special needs either medically or some other type, and they were evacuating them as fast as they possibly could.

I'm staying in a private study room in the computer lab at school. I moved in with the cats last night.
Anyway, I just woke up about and hour or so ago and it's dark and grey outside with a littel wind and light rain. From what I've heard, New Orleans is practically empty. A girl from my class was going to stay down there for the weekend but they kicked her out on Saturday.

I hope everyone is safe! America's political system used to be about the "pursuit of happiness." Now more and more of us want to stop chasing it and have it delivered.

It just started to make landfall in Lafayette(?) Louisiana, and shouldn't be a direct hit on New Orleans. (Of course neither was Katrina.) And it's only a category 2, so even though they are expecting 19 foot waves, over 20 inches of rain, and winds up to 120 mph, I suppose Cat. 2 is better than 3 or 4. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

This time the people (for the most part) got out of dodge. I work at at a hospital doing Security so we had to stay.
We just got a lot of wind with power lines down and some trees down throughout the city but no flooding. In the uptown area we have the power back on with no electrical or sewerage issues. I haven't seen any roof damage or windows broken on anyones home in our immediate area. Some of the other areas in the state sorry to say had terrible damage. Our prayers go out to them.
