I've never been in the states so I have no idea if Captain Herlcock had ever been aired on TV there.

But it was the case in France during early 80s (We call him Albator here) when I was little.

And yes Leiji Matsumoto is definitely one of the most talented anime artist ever, I'm a big fan of his work.
