Ummmmm. . . why does he have a responsibility to portray a healthy lifestyle to the public??? Michael Phelps' only responsibility is to do what's in his best interest to market his brand. He's not you or your children's legal guardian and doesn't owe anyone an explanation of his business decisions. If you're basing your dietary decisions based on a marketing ad or a spokesperson's endorsement, honey, you got bigger issues. Do you really think that him appearing on a Wheaties box, or a Frosted Flakes for that matter, is going to make a single kid stop stuffing their face???

boxed Well I do think they bare some accountability for what they peddle. Not foremost but in some sense. shrug

Adults reach out for the regular flakes.
Kids reach out for the Frosted ones.

I wanted to clarify one thing; my 3 kids are thin,

...in fact I want my oldest son to gain some weight, and we are certainly NOT health freaks. They eat as much McDonald's, pizza and Frosted Flakes as the next kid. But my wife and I make sure to curtail the between-meal snacks, the soda, the candy, we push the vegetables and try to limit their TV time.
So, yeah I understand the need for parental control over children's diet & exercise.

THAT BEING SAID; IMO there is something "not right" about an Olympic athlete pimping himself to the highest bidder regardless of the message he may portray. 24 years ago, I wouldn't have had a problem with Mary Lou Retton on a box of Froot Loops (let's say) but in this day and age, with McDonalds being sued by fat kids and with restaurants being FORCED by the governmentto post the caloric values of their meals (rolleyes) it just doesn't sit well to have such a monumentally important athlete peddling fat.

That is what I'm trying to discuss here...not parental responsibility.

MCDonald's has healthy alternatives, all fast food joints do now. Burger King is really behind on that as far as breakfasts, but McDonald's sells yogurts, egg McMuffins, that are actually low fat! Only 6 points on weight watchers!Wendy's offers baked potatoes, chilli, oranges, McDonalds offers apple dippers. They have really answered the call for healthy alternatives. Now, if I could just get Bojangles to make fat free fried chicken....well I tried!

Bruce Jenner said in an interview that his celebrity was going to be short lived after the olympics, so he basically pimped himself out to the highest bidder as well. He said if they were cutting a check, he was taking. I kind of don't see the difference.

Not just beer companies, of course, but energy drinks and all manner of other stuff, but I think Beer Chang was the main sponsor for the Thai olympic team. The two gold winning athletes get something like 20 million baht, several 'bahts' (the standard unit - 15.2gms 24 karat) of gold, plus a few other little bonuses. Not bad! Especially when you consider 3 million buys you a decent house.

Sucks for the Thai boxer who won gold in Athens, squandered his fortune and then only got a silver medal this time around. falloff

you know honestly, as far as the obesity problem, that's the parents fault, not the athlete... parents should teach their kids about right nutrition... and this way when they get older, they'll have balanced out right eatting habits.. parents eat wrong and give their kids everything they want, so the kids eat wrong too ... i know kids who love fruit and vegetables and will eat healthy foods.. and it's cause their parents instilled that in them..

I agree. Kids are fat not because McDonalds is in business or because of sugary (and yummy) cereals. When I was a kid, I'd eat a whole box of Fruity Pebbles in 2 days by myself and i wasn't fat. Parents let their kids sit in front of TVs and video games all day. They don't want to spend the time to interact with them and run their little butts around and they don't want to take the time to prepare meals at home so the parents get crap to feed their kids; that's why their kids are fat. Shit if kids want to be like Michael Phelps, they may want some Frosted Flakes (which I happen to like), but they're going to want to go swimming too and their lazy ass parent aren't going to take them.
