"Dimi, why you do this to me...." [Edited 8/25/08 13:18pm] [Edited 8/25/08 13:19pm] i love the seventies-ness of that movie, and i really really love the style of big-budget horror movies from that period (the shining, amityville horror, etc.), but i'm sorry...for years and years i wasn't allowed to watch 'the exorcist'. when i was finally old enough to watch it, i thought it was the silliest damn thing ever. i giggled through the scary stuff, i think because i felt like it was paced like a road runner cartoon or something. overall, i loved the acting and the story, but the spooky stuff was just kinda dumb to me. maybe it was all those years not being allowed to see it, i had all these horrific images imagined, and the real thing wasn't as bad as what was in my head. that's not very comforting. I totally hear you. I read the book when I was like 10 years old. My teachers kept saying "Um....I don't think you should be reading that...." I wouldn't see the movie. I used to hear the commercials come on (the song Tubular Bells) and I would run out of the room. It's funny 'cause my late best friend Francisco and I used to watch this movie over and over. We were obsessed by it. My friends and I say that Francisco is still around watching over us. This was definately the case when I went to London 3 months ago. I was going to my plane boarding gate and there it was. VIRGIN AIRLINE - Tubular Belle. They name all of their planes. I was like "Yep, Francisco's joking with me!" Needless to say there was turbulence the ENTIRE trip. I'm sorry to ramble. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! I believe in this day & age it is alright to approach cerain things with a comical view on it, religion is one of those. Stiller is a product of Hollywood and therefore pretty mainstream. Heck, Hollywood is full with jewish executive people, do you think they would give him the money to make a movie that is truely insulting the jewish religion & culture?? [Edited 8/26/08 2:11am] Exactly, it does make a difference if you're poking fun at yourself or at someone else. Some of Chris Rock's jokes might be really offensive if they were told by a white guy, but funny as hell when coming from him. Or Homer Simpson watching the Def Comedy Jam and laughing hysterically at a joke about how white people drive and saying "It's true, we're so lame!!!" Maybe the movie is not funny, but I'll take my humor tasteful, tasteless, shallow, deep, offensive, innocent--as long as it's funny! My Legacy

I'd say it's almost in the same vein. I think that people find the Black Face and the Retarded bits to be pretty offensive, though I don't feel they are projecting it in an offensive way. The Black Face is done with Robert Downey Jr who is considered to be the accomplished/skilled actor they are bringing in to add credibility to the movie they are making which stars the Jack Black character who is a train wreck with boozing and drugs and Ben Stillers character who hasn't had any good roles since the one in which he played a retarded guy. Downey Jr's character is "getting into character" for the role. And to some funny moments NEVER leaves it (actually says he stays in character until the movie comes out on DVD. Sure there are jokes that are bounced off of these situations, but the UN PC moments come from the plot are are really not offensive once you get past whats going on. At least that's my take on it. Instead of casting a black man they would let a white man play a black man in a "triumphant" role ala Meryl Streep and her accents, or the ubiquitous "retarded" role that Tom Hanks, Sean Penn, Leo Dicaprio (who's cred is totally base on that role) have made so goddamn annoying My Legacy

Yeah. The movie was totally boring (except the opening ads, that was pretty brilliant). It wasn't even very politically incorrect. America's political system used to be about the "pursuit of happiness." Now more and more of us want to stop chasing it and have it delivered.

Obviously Leo has some cred as an actor, he's okay and does decent (very successful) movies, but I think for a long time people remembered that he was so great in Gilbert Grape & overlooked that he's only been movie-star good since then, not amazing performance good. But that's just my opinion of course. Martin Scorsese seems to like him. But that makes me wonder if he's lost it My Legacy
