I didn't see the Exorcist until my senior year of college. I'm like you and the type to sit with my eyes covered...let me tell you in all sincerity that after I saw that movie it was emotionally one of the roughest weekends in my entire life. That movie cut me to.the.CORE. neutral

I heard the whole point of the movie was to be offensive. Ya know, a Borat-style "ha ha it's hilarious because it's so offensive! But don't worry kids, we're only joshin' ya"

I don't plan on paying money to see it. That kind of humour just doesn't tickle me. Can't say I won't see it eventually if someone else rents it something though. shrug

Know what is funny? (At least to me) Brent Butt talking about how, if you had enough money you could buy Red Deer, Alberta, pave it, and rebuild it with NERF equipment. I like silly shit. razz

what tickles you is getting Americans offened about their fuel prices, then? wink

That's still a dumb thing to complain about. Gas is CHEAP in the U.S.

But let's keep that otu of this thread, mmkay?

it's a big FUCK YOU in the face of actors, producers, directors...pretty much all of hollywood.

the Simple Jack thing was making fun of actors who protray the mentally challenged for acclaim (Tom Hanks, Cuba Gooding Jr, Sean Penn)

All the main characters were making fun of various actors:

Ben Stiller's character was a parody of action stars who are losing their steam.

RDJ's character was a parody of actors who get WAY caught into their character. (Russel Crowe for example)

Jack Black's character was a parody of comedians known for their gross out humor. (eddie murphy)

and Brandon's character was a parody of rap stars becoming actors.

there's really nothing offensive about this movie at all.

To be honest, just by the trailer.... no no,

even just stills from the movie that I have seen to promote it...

it's sorta like,

brace urself to be offended. If I see it I will be prepared to be offended at some point, like a 2 Live Crew album.

I was prepared to be offended. It was just a bad movie to me. It's wasn't that it was so offensive it turned me off, it just wasn't funny period. Not to me anyways.

can't wait to see it, I'll probably laugh very loud.....also at the fact that there are people who are offended by it!

Sorry, Stymie.... comfort I remember hearing about people in the USA getting offended by some movie of the Farally-brothers, when I saw the movie myself I was really wondering what the fuss is about.

Given the fact that Tropic Thunder is an American Hollywood movie, it probably won't be that offending!

Ben Stiller has never done something too outrageous so far, I'm pretty sure he hasn't now either.

I totally get that people laugh at things that others find offensive and laugh at the fact that people are offended by it. We've had several conversations here about it and have seen several folks pick at folks because they were offended. shrug

it's very hard to offend me. It's got to be a personal attack in order for it to even qualify as offensive...and even then...I don't usually give a shit.

i'm still curious about it. i usually hate movies that ben stiller is IN, but i usually tend to really enjoy the movies he writes/directs. i LOVED zoolander, for example. (then again, bowie was in it, so i'm biased redface )

i heard a lot of stuff about the "offensive" humor in this movie, but i also heard that the touchy stuff is a matter of context and intent, and if you process the satire the way they intend, then it's not offensive at all. then again, sometimes bad satire has a way of clouding up the intent of the humor, and you're left with a big, unintentionally offensive mess. i'd be interested in seeing how i respond to it - it couldn't be worse than south park or team america, could it?

shrug Looks like it'll do well. Got kinda gross, a lot of spoofing on actors and some of their charaters, seemed like some serious hollywoodish issues came up. Blue-eyed contact lens creeped me out far more, talk about extreme.

i love the seventies-ness of that movie, and i really really love the style of big-budget horror movies from that period (the shining, amityville horror, etc.), but i'm sorry...for years and years i wasn't allowed to watch 'the exorcist'. when i was finally old enough to watch it, i thought it was the silliest damn thing ever. i giggled through the scary stuff, i think because i felt like it was paced like a road runner cartoon or something. overall, i loved the acting and the story, but the spooky stuff was just kinda dumb to me. maybe it was all those years not being allowed to see it, i had all these horrific images imagined, and the real thing wasn't as bad as what was in my head.

that's not very comforting. lol
