I cut my own umbilical cord. My mum is so relieved I'm not following her around like a puppy on a leash any longer.

for about two years i went out every weekend handing out cards on basic street safety and safety whistles and talked to people about the increase of hate crimes and street violence in the San Diego Gayborhood. About a year into a guy came up to me and gave me a hug while I was out celebrating Mardi Gras, and he said thank you for saving my life. Since I don't wear my glasses when I'm out as a Sister I didn't recongize him, plus i probably talk to 100 or so people a night so I tend not to remember them anyway. I asked him what I did, and he said that I gave him a safety card and a whistle outside of a bar a few months earlier and as he was walking him he was jumped, and he had the whistle and blew and the attackers left.

I'm pretty sure I stopped someone committing suicide, if not directly.

This guy I knew through the youth group I used to go to basically bid me goodbye on MSN, it was one of the scariest moments of my life.

I called my friend who was also in the youth group ASAP and told her what he'd said. She barely cared and just told me to pray. I got furious and demanded she call the youth group leader to try to contact him. She did and eventually he was convinced not to.

I can't imagine what would've happened if I'd just thought "Oh..it's just for attention". And that was the day I gave up on religion, too.

Indeed.

I was shocked at all the talk of love and support from these people, then to see next to none when someone needed it most.

A few years ago, I went back to college - and took a 'public speaking' class. It shouldn't have been a big deal - a 100-level class - but putting myself out there has always been an ordeal for me. When the assignment came up for spending five minutes making a persuasive argument, I decided on making a positive petition for gay marriage.

During my commute to this school, I would drive by a half dozen mega-churches. Or their subsideraries. Or their outlets.

I was one of the last people to get up, having listened to arguments for prayer in school, against abortion, etc. I knew my audience was at the opposite end of the spectrum, core values-wise.

I got up and nailed it. I doubt if I changed the minds of many people, but I got up and made - at least for this audience - an unpopular, reasonable statement. Part of me wishes I could reproduce it word for word; part of me just want to remember it as making a stand.

Jess, I think you missed the real reason you were there at that time and helped that person out. Do you think you were there just because or do you think that possibly God put you in that place at that time because he knew you had enough moxy to insist to that that person do something! If not it could have turned out different, it wasn't a coincidence you know.

Btw, good going!
thumbs up!

I guess. Maybe I should've said that was the day I gave up on religious PEOPLE. Or those ones, anyway.

I thought of one!

Through no knowledge of my own at the time, I sort of saved someone's life, just by meeting them. To make a long story short, I walked up and starting talking to someone at a party. We ended up hitting it off and hanging out for the rest of the evening, and ended up dating for a bit.

After a month or so of dating, he told me he had a confession to make. He told me he'd been planning to kill himself. He'd been massively depressed, felt alienated from his freinds and family and had lost all contact with most of his friends but one of them convinced him to come out that night. After being miserable most of the night, he was convinced he didn't want to go on and not five minutes before I walked up and started talking to him, he'd sent himself a text message, as a sort of pact with himself to finally do it. And then I showed up.

I was fairly shocked by the whole thing. But he was a nice guy. We pretty much stopped dating after that (for more reasons than that, but it was pretty clear he wasn't in any position to date seriously) but we still talked for a while while he seemed to be doing things to get himself back together. And I definitely can't take "credit" for "saving" him.. But I know I'm glad I met him. And at the right time, too.
