Noam Chomsky downs pornography.

I was going to post this on the politics forum, but since this is about porn and what Chomsky thought about it. Noam Chomsky, by the way is the major left intellectual in the world. Here, I disagree slightly with his critique. Sure, pornography can be degrading, even evil, but it can also help marriages, help sexual self esteem and even curb crime like rape.

it CAN help but it can also foster a lot of misconceptions. for example, 1) sex takes under four minutes; 2) that women get aroused in two seconds simply by the mere thought of sex and come in under three minutes, gasping and shouting oh god!

well, yeah there is that too. most porn is NOT made for the benefit of women, and some of it encourages the derogation of women as people. pushes the perception of women as sexual objects, to be used for release and gratification.

lol

You have a point though. Too many people are getting their sexual education from porn, and it's fostering all kinds of silly ideas and behaviours.

That's my personal problem with porn, by the way. That it has such potential to really be a great sexual aid, but most of it is just ridiculous.

nod

Porn, in and of itself, is not sexist or degrading toward women. But it too easily can be, and I've seen a lot of it that crosses the line.

There is also the issue of heterosexual porn so rarely being focused on the woman's/women's pleasure. I know the market is largely men, but honestly. He gets 10 minutes of knob slobbing, and she gets a nipple tweak? Something's off balance here. razz

There would be no derogation of women if women didn't do porn.

actually it is accurate to say that women do not always have the power to say no, and yes there are still slaves in the sex trade. porn is the tip of that iceberg

i've seen very few pornos that are accurate that way. it can give rise to weird expectations. men are wondering why their partner won't come in under four minutes.

i'm personally acquainted with a women who was lured to japan under false pretenses, told she would become an aerobics instructor, and then upon arrival the old bait and switch was pulled on her.

she was required to dance topless in a nightclub. she felt she had no choice, as she'd no money and her permission to remain in japan depended upon her employer.

likewise, women in third world countries are being lured with promises of jobs, that take them to foreign locales and turn out to be porn jobs

yes, well, i never said it wasn't possible. it's just.... lots of men don't know about foreplay. with the right kind of foreplay we can come in under 30 seconds. but most pornos don't do foreplay scenes.

And I understand that but most of the women I watch in porn do it of their own volition.

don't get me wrong, a woman can make a LOT of money doing porn. it can be a stepping stone to a better life. but i don't think those women are the majority.

I read an article not too long ago about how the "porn" culture of today is affecting young peoples' sexual behaviour. More and more, it seems, young women will readily perform oral sex without expecting oral in return from their partners. Why? Because it's not expected in porn.

Pornography can curb rape?...That's the first I've ever heard of that. Rape is more about power than anything...I'm not sure how pornography helps to curb that.

from the pornos i've watched, i think the majorioty of these movies are made for men, by men, to help men get off.

hmmm. any ORGers want to start a women-oriented porno company? where the scenes involve a lot of cuddling on the sofa during the movie, followed by ots of nice, slow touching, a relaxed transition to the bed or the kitchen table, and twenty minutes of how do you want it darling??? big grin

Some might have you believe that's all women want.

I like good dirty sex as much as anybody. But when what's on the screen is nothing but, "Oh, forget about what I want. Let's pleasure this goofy looking dude with the oversized schlong." I can't get with that.

I'd dispute that gorgeous porn women thing, but there's no mistake there's something weird going on with central casting at the porn studios when it coems to the male stars. Half have beer guts, and the half that don't are old.

The only attractive male porn stars are doing gay porn. Go figure. razz

By whose estimation?

Chomsky's statements here on porn are typical of his stated beliefs on most subjects: totally disingenuous (speaking of which, anyone who believes his story about the Hustler interview might be interested in some swampland in Florida I have for sale deal).

As someone who used to buy into the bullshit of Chomsky and his ilk, I'm here to tell ya that Bill Maher's views on marriage and communism ('They don't conform to human nature, so you're going to end up with lying and hypocrisy.') could also apply to just about any radical left-wing stance.

That might be true in some cases but I´m not really buying it. Like Byron said, rape has much more to do with power than actual sex or letting off steam.

I also don´t believe that prostitution curbs rape. And even if that´s the case, than I feel ashamed as a man that some men would go that route ( i.e rape someone if they can´t get laid ) ....how horrible is that ?

True but.....believe or not, some women rather like it rough and prefer that kind of rough and dirty porn as opposed to porn specifically geared toward a female audience. It all depends.
