Or rather, my son made it. But you parents know what I mean.

Man, it was NERVE-RACKING. The first day was shortened due to rain, and my son went 1 - 1 in his matches. His loss was on the deuce point of a tied set, and his opponent hit a serve and then started screaming to distract my son which, unfortunately, worked. My son hit his return shot into the net.

The next morning he was also 1 - 1 in his matches and THAT loss was on a lob that was 2 inches out on the deuce point of a tied set. So the two losses were by a combined total of about 6 inches.

Then the coach split the players up - the best players stayed on the varsity courts and the rest had to go to the 9th grade center. My son was sent to the 9th grade center with all the "bad" players. He sent me a text about it and I was DYING. He was really mad because players he had beaten got to stay on the varsity court. I texted back to stay focused and stay mad and beat everyone senseless. He did, going 3 - 0 in the "bad" group.

He was asked to come back today, along with 5 other players. They were playing for the remaining spots, but we didn't know if there was 1 spot or 5 spots left. So I told him to go out and win every point if he could. Have no mercy.

Well, he won his first match 5 - 0 and the coach said, "I've seen enough. Here's your packet, you made the team". YEAH!

I'm now the father of a high school athlete! You'll know me by the massive team stickers I will have covering the back window of my Suburban. Hell, I'll run for president of the tennis booster club!

What the students don't seem to understand is how tough a call this is for a coach. You see a kid play a few games/sets/matches; factoring in things like bad match-ups and bad days, it can be very hard to decide which players are better (especially towards the bottom). Finally, after all those nerve-racking decisions, things can look totally different after you've had a week or so of practice.

Just keep your son focused on being the best player he can be and he'll be fine.

I think there's a chance the coach wanted to see how my son would react to adversity. My son's personal tennis coach is a former pro whose put all his kids through college on tennis scholarships. He's also partly responsible for the current HS coach getting the school job.

He told me yesterday he thought my son was a lock to make the team, and was surprised he didn't get put on yesterday.

Whatever, I'm just glad we got such a happy ending!
