I just registered for school yesterday and right now I'm taking one prerequisite before I start nursing school in January. I'm also working full time nights. I know other people have done it and I know I can do it, but man I feel nuts.

lol

I'm taking Human Anatomy and Physiology and the lab. I'll go to class from 5:30 to 10:30pm.

Who has worked full time and gone to school too? Who has done it as a single parent? Advice? Tips?

Feel free to post a bunch of random crap cause ya'll do that.... rolleyes

Done it.

I worked full time and took a full load of college courses when my two daughters were small. I was also a full-time single parent, meaning I had no help or support from their other parent. No financial support (I never sought it because fuck him) and no visitation.

At the time it was really stressful, and after a year I made the decision to stop school. I was only 22 years old and at that time it was too much for me to take on and do well at all of them.

The advice that has been given so far is sound: Do NOT think about how hard it is. Just do it. Take each day as it comes and keep your goals in mind. If you become a martyr about it, you won't succeed.

Good luck though I am sure you will do fine. You are a smart lady.

Take care! It sounds like your boys are going to be a good inspiration and incentive to get through it.

You have succeeded at being a good mom. The rest will be a piece of cake now.

I'm on my home stretch and a class and a half away from a master's. I feel that a Master's program is not neccessarily easier, but more focused than undergrad.

But...with the home stretch in sight I'm like: "why am I getting this?" I think that is because with today's economy, education does NOT equal better job or pay.

Undergrad - I worked at a radio station on air - the graveyard shift (12a-6a) school from 8a - 12noon. I also had a retail job somewhere in there along with extra street team promotions and nightclub promotions. I was tired all the time. I had visions of being a Syliva Rhone - a female music industry exec. Five years after that I walked away from doing mornings at the same station to hustling radio ad sales to now a bullshit job about to have an MBA...and trying super hard to get out of the bullshit job -

But I'm starting a business and the MBA really helps. The program is very entreprenuerial. Who wants to be a corporation's bitch forever anyway? I just answered my why am I doing this question.

Best of luck. Everyone goes through it. Not being alone in the strain and stress of education really helps. Everyone has been there and survived. You will too. I don't know anyone that didn't struggle - except my trust fund friend, and she never finished - see? That hard work builds character!

wave Single parent of 3 including a kid with autism, work full-time and in two weeks: school full-time. People will tell you that you are insane and they can't do it. Being in the middle of it Jill, I just kinda feel I do what I have to. I need a degree to make the type of money I'll need to take care of my son. And I now officially have no help with him. I look forward to school starting again because being home sometimes makes me bawl my eyes out. In the past three months, my son broke my toe, my finger and he is not sleeping.

So.....hopefully looking at my situation just made yours a little easier. lol

I stopped when my children were little and when back when they were old enough to go full day. I worked as a student worker at school while going to school full time. My whole schedule was wrapped around their schedule. Its pretty rough(doing your homework and helping them homework) but it can be done just focus focus focus and remember if you don't have control over it-don't worry about it. You'll have some sleepless weeks come midterm and finals(some weeks I would only have 2-3 hours of sleep ) but it will be okay. I wasn't single but I might as well have been lol In the end it paid off I finally finished in May.

I did for four years for my B.A and now struggling to do an MBA.
Hating it right now. It's a real struggle.
Advice. Keep at it. Go to summer school and try to avoid taking semesters off.
Get through it and be done.
I could some advice also because I am struggling. Not really motivated right now.
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

The key is time management. Dont waste your time. Im about to start back to school (physical therapy degree) next week. I have clinicals that start in September and I work evenings.

My best advice is to ENJOY the ride. Make sure that you never ever complain. I love A&P, let me know if you need any good mnemonics.

Do mnemonics work for you?

I learned af few mnumonic tricks (journeys and maps in my mind to store laundry lists, etc.), but can't figure out how to translate them to studying.

They're very powerful I admit. I almost never forget things when I use mnumonics.

Explain this to me later, I'll need it!

Thanks Jill, I am also ( God willing)be in anatomy this semester. ( I'm first on the waiting list.) I'm also terrified. I've placed 22 years between myself and education. I'm no dummy but I am old. eek

I hope to get in so we can support each other through the semester. We have nearly the same life circumstances already. wink

Jill is the most amazing woman. This is a tough time for her, but she is tough.
It probably means there won't be much free time, but this is a step up in life. A preparation for a better life.
Jill, you are appreciated, and supported by your friends and family. You'll make it, and it'll go faster than you think.

I'm considering myself the luckiest I've ever been, because I'm blessed with having you in my life. You are strong, smart and simply the best kiss2

I'm behind you 100%.

hug

When I went back to school to finish my undergrad degree, I was working a full-time job and a part-time job - and taking six credits a semester.

My best tip: Don't think about how hard it is and how you'll do it all. If you think too much about it, you won't be able to keep going. Just keep your head down and put one foot in front of the other.

That is SO damn true nod...

I wasn't a single parent at the time, but I was a parent...and I took a full load of courses at California Institute of the Arts while working at night cleaning an office building by myself. Check this:

I'd leave my apartment at 6:30 am

Drop my ex-wife and daughter off at her job 30 minutes away (she taught at a private school, our daughter attended the preschool on the grounds)

Get to CalArts about 40 minutes later (20 minutes before class started).

Attend classes from 8:00-12:00

Work on previous day's homework assignments from 12:00-1:00 pm

Attend classes from 1:00-4:00 pm

Leave CalArts at 4:00 pm to go back and pick up my ex-wife and daughter

Take them home (usually would get there around 5:00 pm)

Immediately turn around and drive back to CalArts for my 6:00 pm class

Arrive at CalArts at 6:10 pm (damn traffic mad )

Attend class from 6:10-9:00 pm

Either work on assignments or attend computer lab from 9:30-10:30 pm

Drive to my night job, arrive around 11:15 pm

Start working my night job at 11:30 pm

Finish working my night job at 5:00 am

Drive home, arriving at 5:30 am

Sleep from 5:30-6:00 am

Wake up at 6:00 am, and start the whole shibang all over again

That went on for 4 days a week (no evening classes on Fridays, thank God)...I literally was working on 30 minutes of sleep those days neutral...I used to fall asleep behind the wheel late at night and the car would start to run off the road, scaring the shit out of me lol confused...Luckily the roads were almost completely empty at the time...If I actually stopped to think about how much I was doing, it would have paralyzed me and I would have just rolled over and gone back to sleep, seriously.

my God!!!! that's too much for one person!!! i admire your work ethic! my husband is working overnights right now from 9pm until 8am in the morning, and going to college full-time....and i don't know how he does it? he's so tired!!! neutral
