I'm with you on this one. I'm a teacher of young kids, and nothing grits me more than the 'kiddy voice'. It stunts language development, and does not provide a healthy conversational model. I teach special education, and often times folks who teach kids with challenges tend to really amp up the babytalk.
I find that using a normal tone of voice and simplifying the language so that it is developmentally appropriate is the most useful for little ones. Just my opinion.

A friend of mine speaks pigeon English on the phone and outside of class to his Thai English students (young and old) and it makes me cringe. It's like he's copying their speech to make things easier but it sounds awful and is obviously very unhelpful as far as helping them learn the language. I've never graded my speech with my wife and I think she's better for it. I'd never purposely use poor grammar or anything like that with anyone here, but I do use silly voices when I speak Thai with my nephews, who range from 6 months to 7 years old. I don't think I could be patronising to them. If you love kids and you genuinely care I don't see how it could be. I don't think kids see it as patronising. I know the type of voice you're referring to and I don't think it's a big problem.

I hate that voice it just reeks of insincere and untrustworthy to me for some reason!

I think it's okay to use it til about 3. Then it's just getting weird. Once you can have a decent, logical conversation with a kid, there's no need to get all "goo goo ga ga" on them.

Studies show that all people in all cultures use "baby talk" with infants and that it's likely to help develop their speaking skills. But I agree that after a certain point it's uneccessary and sad. |

What's worse is when teachers, parents, etc. who've gotten in the habit of using the "kiddie voice" with children are removed from that context and can't drop the voice when speaking to other adults!! I pity them so. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
