The U.S. is on pace to win the medal count.
The U.S. should do better than China in track and field which starts this weekend and hopefully push up the gold total.

Changes in medal standings

On August 15, 2008, the International Olympic Committee announced North Korean shooter Kim Jong Su had tested positive for the banned substance of propranolol and thus stripped of his two medals from the 2008 Summer Olympics, making Kim the first medal winning athlete to test positive for a banned substance at the 2008 Olympic Games. He originally placed 3rd in the 10 metre air pistol and 2nd in the 50 metre pistol. In the 10 metre air pistol, the bronze medal went to Jason Turner of the United States. In the 50 metre pistol, the silver medal went to Tan Zongliang of China, and the bronze medal went to Vladimir Isakov of Russia.[7]

Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian was originally a bronze medalist in the Greco-Roman -84 kg event. However, at the medal ceremony he walked off of the podium and dropped his medal in protest of the judging in his semi-final match. On August 16, 2008, the IOC decided to strip him of his medal because they felt it amounted to a political demonstration and was disrespectful to other athletes. No other athlete will be given his medal.[8]

Canada cracks the Top Twenty.
The U.S. doesn't look like it's going to top the gold medal list, but
may eke out the overall medal count.

One odd thing I have noticed is all the athletes who live & train in the US that are playing for their native countries--Yao Ming is the most famous example, maybe.

I'm not bitter, but could we add those to the US count, please?

Why would we add them to the U.S. count? Yao Ming is not a U.S. citizen.
There are U.S. citizens who are playing for other countries also, just to be at the Olympics.

USA is #3 although with the second highest total of medals.
Gold still trumps total silver and total bronze.

Thank You. Im trying to steer clear of the latest results as NBC has we waiting to tonight to see whats already happened. Pisses me off to no end. By tomorrow when I return to work, folks are going to be coming in blabbing the results of things before i can see it.

Last night Miguel was sooooo excited for the men's relay and i had already accidentally read the results. My daughter looked at me funny when i stoically watched the end of the match. I let her know I already knew just didn't want them to be tipped off. pout It really pisses me off sense it was a fucking fantastic feat.

knowing the results hasn't lessened my excitement when watching. Well I guess it has but not to the extent that I won't watch because I already know.
